“Lovagechant!” Bateye’s eye widened as he watched the leader get slammed against a wall, the impact sending a sickening thud echoing into his ears. Was he dead? He couldn’t be dead. Whatever he was, Bateye knew he couldn’t leave him. Whipping his head around to make sure no coyotes spotted him too quickly, he pelted toward the unconscious tom and grasped the scruff of his neck in his jaw. His muscles screamed with the effort as he dragged him away from the den like dead weight. He couldn’t leave him. He couldn’t watch him die— He finally dragged him far enough away that maybe a coyote wouldn’t kill him. He still couldn’t judge for sure. Whisking around back towards the coyotes, he guarded the leader. It was his job as an advisor, anyway. Maybe now he could finally protect some cat from something he believed he could control. He flinched back as a coyote turned straight to him. Scrambling away from the leader, he hissed as a way to turn the attention to himself. “Hey! Coyote—over here!” The canine did not hesitate—it bounded over on heavy paws. Bateye was too fast for it, dodging the teeth even with his tired muscles. This rush did not last long, however, for after a second dodge, the canine’s jaws snapped down onto his flank. A wave of pain shot through his entire body as the bones crunched under the force. He knew it was over. He knew he couldn’t get away, even as he dragged himself helplessly over the dusty earth. He thought of his niece and nephew. His sister. The other advisors. The last thing he heard was a crack as the beast clamped down onto his skull.
