A young boy is tormented by his older brother and eventually suffers a fatal injury when an animatronic, Fredbear, bites his head during a birthday party. This tragic event becomes known as the Bite of '83. The boy's father, William Afton, is a co-founder of the diner and a brilliant but disturbed engineer. This sets off a dark chain of events. Two years later, in 1985, William lures five children to a back room at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza while disguised in a Spring Bonnie suit. He murders them, and their bodies are hidden inside animatronic suits. These suits become haunted by the spirits of the murdered children, and strange behavior in the animatronics begins to occur. Although William is suspected, he escapes justice due to lack of evidence. In 1987, a new location of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza opens, but the problems continue. An incident known as the Bite of '87 occurs when an animatronic attacks a day-shift employee and severely damages their frontal lobe. The incident causes a scandal, and the restaurant begins to lose its reputation. Despite efforts to modernize with new "Toy" animatronics, the issues with haunted and malfunctioning robots persist. By 1993, the franchise is on the decline. Another location is struggling, and a night quard named Mike Schmidt takes a job there. Mike experiences nightly attacks from the animatronics, who mistake him for their killer. Over five nights, he slowly learns the truth behind the murders through hidden messages and newspaper clippings. Eventually, the restaurant shuts down again. Years later, Michael Afton, the son of William, seeks redemption for his family's crimes. He works at various Fazbear locations under different names, investigating and trying to uncover the truth. He ends up in an underground facility in Sister Location, where advanced animatronics like Circus Baby reside. These were designed by William, and his daughter Elizabeth was killed by one of them. Michael is manipulated into freeing the animatronics, and they merge into a creature called Ennard. It wears his body as a disguise until it eventually escapes. William eventually returns to one of his old hideouts and dismantles the haunted animatronics, only to be tricked by the spirits. They corner him, and he hides inside a faulty springlock suit. The suit malfunctions and crushes him, trapping him as Springtrap, a zombified animatronic. In the early 2020s, Fazbear Entertainment attempts to rebrand and clean up its public image by creating a virtual reality game. During this process, the digital remnants of William Afton, now called Glitchtrap, infect the game. A beta tester named Vanessa becomes possessed or controlled by Glitchtrap, setting up future events.In 2035, a massive entertainment complex called the Fazbear Mega Pizzaplex opens. A boy named Gregory becomes trapped inside overnight. With help from a malfunctioning but friendly animatronic named Glamrock Freddy, Gregory uncovers the continued existence of William Afton beneath the building. Vanessa, now Vanny, is a follower of Glitchtrap. Gregory confronts the remnants of Afton and either escapes or destroys him, depending on the choices made. After these events, the story continues in a sequel game where a character possibly related to Gregory returns to the ruined Pizzaplex. He is manipulated by the Mimic, an Al with traits of Glitchtrap, continuing the cycle of horror and control. The FNaf story blends tragedy, supernatural horror, and the consequences of obsession, following the Afton family, haunted children, and a cursed legacy that spans decades.
