Recently, I've been seeing more and more posts online about AI and art. It's honestly really discouraging for me as an artist because I see so many people who would rather use AI than buy from or hire artists. While I believe AI as a whole is not bad and CAN be used for beneficial purposes, art is not an area where AI should be used. First off, AI takes from art online and then mashes it together to form images. That is NOT art. I've seen people say that artists do the same thing. No, artists add their own spin to their art, they create new things, they add CREATIVITY. AI cannot do that because it can only take from what already exists. Real art is a culmination of a person's personal experience and knowledge and thoughts. Second, AI is unethical. It takes art and uses it without consent from artists. Artists spend a lot of time honing and learning skills, and AI using our work without consent is not okay. Many artists post on social media because we want to share our art with others, not have it used for AI training. It's a problem that big social media sites make it hard or even impossible to turn off AI options. Third, AI takes meaning away from art. AI does not create art; it simply cobbles together images based on existing images. I do not believe "AI can do it faster" is something to brag about since the time and effort taken to create art makes it meaningful. Saying that you made art after generating an AI image is like microwaving a ready-to-eat frozen dinner and saying you cooked it as an expert chef. It would be different if you really were a chef and actually cooked the meal yourself. AI also does not make art "more accessible." There are people out there with disabilities who find ways to overcome their challenges in order to make art. Take the artist Chuck Close for example. Even though he became paralyzed from a seizure, he kept painting and creating art. AI should not be an excuse to not learn art yourself or to hire an actual artist. Please don't misunderstand me; AI can be used for good. It can be applied in many fields to improve efficiency, reduce human error, and automate routine work. HOWEVER, AI should not be used in art. It's unethical, and there is no good reason that AI should be used for art. Why generate images when there are perfectly good artists all over the world? Better yet, learn art yourself instead of relying on AI to generate sloppy images. I believe AI should assist in tedious work so that humans have more time to do creative things like drawing, painting, making music, etc. Our ability to create new things and work creatively is what makes us human. Don't let AI take that away from us. Thanks for reading all the way to the end if you're here. And please share your thoughts as well! If you support AI, let me know what your reasons are. Seeing new perspectives is good for learning
edit: I would also like bring up the topic of AI "art" used in art contests with real artists. I don't think it's okay to generate an image and enter it alongside pieces that artists have put so much effort into. If people want to have contests for AI images (i have no idea why but to each their own), then just do that instead
