✦⁺₊✩☽⋆preface⋆☾✩⁺₊✦ "No, it can't be, please!" "I'm sorry, but it has to be this way, Ashstar." "She isn't even a warrior yet! Can't you wait until the warrior ceremony? It's *tomorrow* night!" "Trust me, I don't want to do this either." "This is my *daughter* that we're talking about, Star! My *only* surviving kit!" "She has to." Ashstar thought about it for a long minute. "Fine." She muttered. "Send her the message." ✦⁺₊✩☽⋆☾✩⁺₊✦ ✦⁺₊✩☽⋆chapter 1⋆☾✩⁺₊✦ Echopaw crouched down and waggled her haunches as she bent her legs and leaped forward, paws outstretched and claws unsheathed. Her victim twitched its nose and started to dart away, but Echopaw lunged to the side and grabbed the golden-brown squirrel. She bit its neck and smiled as the warm blood and taste trickled between her teeth. "Nice catch!" Badgerpaw said, with his mouth full of vole. "Let's get back to camp before it gets dark," Echopaw mewed. The two trotted back into the EchoClan camp in the caves under the Startree. They dropped their catches on the pile and moved over into the apprentices den and looked out at the pink-and-gold sunset. Echopaw leaned her head on Badgerpaw's back and sighed. "It's our last night as apprentices. How do you feel about that?" "I don't know how I feel, E, but I know that life is something we should take step by step, so just stay in the now, okay?" "Okay," she said, then closed her eyes and smiled. "Life is a river that flows forever. Through life and StarClan, the Dark Forest and the cracks in between. Kits will be born, cats will die, seasons will change and moons will pass. Life is a river that swept me in it's current from my house to EchoClan. Life led me to you, so that's a river I'm willing to swim in." Badgerpaw whispered. Echopaw's dark gray fur tinged pink and her ears flattened. She whispered, "thank you," and before they knew it, they were asleep. ✦⁺₊✩☽⋆☾✩⁺₊✦
