Chapter 1 of, Love in a Latte Cup The wind carried the scent of lattes and damp leaves as it brushed the cracked open cafe window. Today was a Wednesday afternoon which usually meant, Bree was meeting me at the cafe. I opened the walnut door with gold embellishments on it. The chime over the door rang as I waved Mira a quick hello and took a seat. I opened my phone and noticed a text from Bree. “I can’t make it to Rustleaf today, sorry.” it read. Bummed, I sent a text back letting Bree know it was totally fine when obviously it wasn’t. See, Bree and I weren't like those casual friends or ‘you want to hang out today?’ type of friends. We were best friends, and I knew NOTHING would keep us apart. I glanced over at Mira who stood behind the counter, her hands wrapped around a ceramic mug, perhaps my usual order. Outside, the sidewalk was scattered with gold and rust-colored leaves, and the sky hung low, as if it, too, was ready to rest. Minutes later, Mira came over to my table and sat down handing me my usual. A cinnamon maple latte with a drop of espresso and cold foam. “What’s wrong Sienna?” Mira asked. “Bree….” I responded. “She can’t come can she,” Mira said with an acknowledging smile. “I’m here you know!" “Yeah I know,” I took a sip of my latte hitting the spot as usual. I watched as a small boy across the street jumped into a pile of leaves with the kind of joy only children or golden retrievers understood. Mira got up from the table and went back to work. I sighed. It’s been a long day, so I tucked in my chair and headed out the door. – – – – – – – – – I was relieved to be home, this fall weather is perfect for a movie i thought. So, I plopped myself on the couch like any other 17 yr old girl and turned the TV on. The door opened. “Dad?” I called. “Hi Sienna,” dad responded. “Oh, you’re home early,” I said, my voice fading. “I’m going to go take a shower,” he said. I hopped off the couch and went into the kitchen to grab a snack. Pretzels, protein bars, fruit roll ups, so many options. The wind howled and knocked a few trashcans down the street. I got a text from Bree. “Shoot-,” I ran upstairs, grabbed a purse from my bedroom, and went to my parents bedroom to to see if my mother had any old makeup I could use. I saw some lipstick and foundation which I quickly applied on. Above the vanity I spotted a crooked picture frame. Weird, I thought. When I tried to fix it, it fell right off! “No freaking way,” there’s a safe behind it embedded into the wall with the combination written on the safe. 65537 it read. I quickly put in the number and twisted open the lock. Inside was a rusty, wooden box with “DO NOT OPEN!” pasted onto it. Of course, me being the nosy girl I am, I opened the package and found something my mother had never shown to me. I cannot believe she’s kept this a secret from me (and possibly my father) for all these years…… Author's Note: Hi eveyone!!
