NEXT ~ https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1224821986/ ------------------------------------------------------------- Shadekit woke to loud squeaking and chirping from the kits around her. Yawning and sitting up, she asked her siblings for an explanation. "We're becoming apprentices, silly!" Stormkit purred. "I hope Rosestar makes Snailtree my mentor! He's so cool!" Gingerkit was the next to speak. "I wanna' have a cool mentor, too! Not someone strict like Nightfang." "I'm gonna' be a medicine cat apprentice! Cloudwhisker said that she got a vision from the old leader telling her that I'd be a good healer, and I like that, because herbs smell nice and a lot of them look pretty! Also Cloudwhisker and Beefur are really nice." Redkit purred with a grin. "What about you, Shadekit?" Shadekit shrugged. "I just hope my mentor isn't old." She licked her chest fur, trying to look good for the apprentice ceremony. The kits' mother, Hollydawn, purred at Shadekit. "It's good not to be picky. If you're picky then how will you ever feel satisfied?" She stood up and licked Stormkit's spikey head fluff, effectively smoothing it down. "May all cats old enough to fetch their own prey gather around the Sharp-Rock for a clan meeting!" Rosestar yowled from outside the nursery. "It's happening! It's happening!" Gingerkit repeated, running outside. "It's-OOMF!" Tripping over his paws, Gingerkit fell onto his face. Heatherfluff and the other kits shared a laugh as Hollydawn trotted outside to check on Gingerkit. Shadekit stared into the clearing, her mind a swirling storm of panicked thoughts. She hid her anxiety well, though. "Come on Shady!' Redkit purred, bouncing outside with Stormkit by her side. Shadekit took a deep breath and smiled, standing up, trying to be ready for her apprentice ceremony. "Coming!" she meowed, padding outside and joining her siblings at the base of the Sharp-Rock, the giant boulder that Rosestar sat on to give announcements. Shadekit had always heard it was named the Sharp-Rock because of it's sharp, strong icicles it collected each winter. She wasn't sure if it was true, but it was a nice story. Suddenly, Rosestar continued speaking. "As you all know, four kits have reached the age of six moons old and are ready to become apprentices!" the leader yowled. Shadekit felt her heard lurch forward in her chest and scanned the crowd of cats gathered before her and her siblings. There she is! she thought, spotting Hollydawn and Heatherfluff sitting outside the nursery with Brightkit. "Sparrowfeather! Please step up!" Rosestar called. Sparrowfeather gladly hopped forward, excitement glimmering in his eyes. Rosestar smiled. "You are a brave warrior and delicate hunter, with a patience and charming like no other. I trust you shall pass these traits onto Gingerpaw." Sparrowfeather nodded and Rosestar turned to Gingerkit. "Gingerkit, you have a bubbly and witty personality, something I want you to continue to grow into. From this day forward, until you receive your warrior name, you shall be known as Gingerpaw." "Gingerpaw! Gingerpaw!" the clan cheered. Shadekit felt warmth swell up in her. She couldn't want to train with Gingerpaw! Watching her brother confidently touch noses with his new mentor, she felt her anxieties ease. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad! The next two ceremonies were pretty boring -- Stormkit became Stormpaw and got apprenticed to Hollowtree, and Redkit to Cloudwhisker. But then it was Shadekit's turn. "Patchlight! Please step up!" Rosestar yowled. Shadekit felt her legs tingle with anticipation and nervousness. It was really happening! She watched as Patchlight bounded forward, a spring in his step similar to a three-moon-old kit. Rosestar continued her speech. "You are a valuable member of this clan, proven by your enthusiastic ability to learn to skills in just a few days. You are the youngest warrior in RainClan, and yet one of the strongest as well. I will be disappointed if you do not pass these skills onto Shadekit." Patchlight smiled and touched his nose to Shadekit, who stood their limply, numb with shock. Rosestar turned her attention to Shadekit. Her heart thumped in her chest, legs weak with anxiety. "Shadekit. You have great potential, young warrior. From this day forward, until you get your warrior name, you shall be known as Shadepaw." The clan erupted into cheers, and all of Shadekit's--Shadepaw's--worries momentarily melted away.
