Fern sat in her room, cello music on a stand in front of her. The bow's weight was familiar in her right hand. Fern grabbed her dark-oak colored cello and did a few warm-ups. Then she started to play the opening of /Dragon Hunter/. During a rest in the song, Fern pressed a button on her speaker, and the sounds of an orchestra playing along with her filled the room. When Fern reached the /D. S. al cota/, there was a knock at the door, but she ignored it, totally in the music zone. "Fern!" Fern kept playing, going across the four strings of her instrument, feeling weightless. "Fern!!" When she reached /the cota/, the music coming from the speaker stopped, and her bow was ripped out of her hand. "What The Hell!?" Fern's head shot up. Dad's newish girlfriend, Sophia, held Fern's speaker in one hand and Fern's cello bow by the hair in the other. Fern glared at her. "What the HELL is /wrong with you!?/" Fern screamed. Not only was Sophia messing up her practice, but she was also ruining the bow by holding it by the hair, which was [/not/] how it was meant to be held. "My coworkers can't hear anything I say, much less pay attention to what i'm saying," Sophia stated it like a fact. "Well, i waited until after your work hours! Dad said i can play after your work hours!" Fern yelled, "You're always working and i ain't waiting any longer to play!" "Oh, yes, you will!" Sophia said, "You can wait ten minutes for me to be done!" "No!" Fern yelled back as she put her cello in its midnight black fabric case along with the bow. Fern stomped down the stairs and put on her shoes. "Where do you think you're going?" Sophia asked. "The garage," Fern answered, slamming the garage door closed behind her. She turned up the temp a little to match the temp inside and turned on her speaker, then set it on a table. She pressed play and played along to Dragon Hunter. As Fern played, she felt herself feel better, like Sophia could do nothing about her or her music right now. After the song was done, Fern heard Seven Nation Army play from the speaker, she grabbed her phone and smiled at the photo of her and her papi with matching half forest green-half dark purple hair doing finger horns like in Stranger Things, and picked up the phone. "Hey, papi!" Fern said, smiling when she heard her other dad's answer. "Hey, Fuz! How's life been?" "boring, Sophia won't let me play my music, or just my cello in general. Lilic is being annoying, but that's normal." Papi laughed at that, "Sounds like life, but what else is going on? Anything fun?" "Not really, Sophia acts like we're babies who can't do anything, and earlier she yelled at me when i played my cello after four!" "It matters if you play before four!?" Papi sounded concerned and annoyed. "Yea, it's Sophia's 'wOrk HOuRs'," Fern said, Voice dripping with sarcasm. "Okay, i'm talking to Bettle about this." "And i only had my speaker and cello making noise, which is not even as loud as a shout!" Fern said, anger mixing with her words. "Papi, i know you travel a lot for work, but could i stay with you for a bit this summer? i even take just a few days! i need to get out of this house or at least away from Dad's straight weird girlfriend!" Fern pleated with her papi, hoping to get a yes. She would even take just an overnight stay with her papi if it meant not having to listen to Sophia yell at and criticize her. "That's actually why i called," Papi said. "i got most of the summer off, and it goes three weeks before school starts. So we could do it until then." "Really!? For real-as-band-kids-are-stuck-ups life?" "Yes, yes!" Papi answered and laughed. "Besides weird straight people, what else is new?" "Not much. Lilac has her podcast; it's the only thing she talks about nowadays." "It's good she has something, just like you do, fuz." "Yea, but she literally won't talk about anything else." "Dang, well, just talk to her about cello for two hours straight and she won't do it no more." "i don't do stuff straight, i do it gay!" Fern said, referencing one of her dad's jokes. "Did you reference one of your dad's jokes?" Papi asked. "Yes, i did!" Fern answered proudly. "I swear, i can feel your grin from here." "Hahaha," Fern laughed a little. Just then, the garage door opened, and Fern grabbed her stuff to move out of the way. Dad pulled up and rolled down the passenger-side window. "Why in hades are you practicing out here, when I've told you [not] to?" Fern motioned to her phone, then put it back to her ear. "Papi, can you give me a moment? Dad just got home and wants to know why i'm in the garage." "Sure, fuz. Tell Lily i said hi." "Okay!" Fern said, and Papi hung up. /So much for that/ she thought. Fern turned to her dad and smiled lightly. "So, was that ya papi?"
"yea, anyways, to answer your question: Sophia yelled at me for playing my cello after her work hours, so i came out here. Also, i told Papi how Sophia gets annoyed if i play during her work hours, and he said he was gonna talk to you about it." Fern paused for a moment, seeing how her dad would respond. "i'll talk to her, okay? you don't have to wait until after four to play." Dad got out of the car and mussed Fern's hair. Fern smiled at this, happy to have her dad on her side.
