On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four airplanes. Two crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, and one hit the Pentagon in Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back. The attacks caused nearly 3,000 deaths and led to many changes in security.
