Sonic laughs in amusement at Lancelot’s blunt response to a joke. Christian chuckles, watching from the trees. The knights sit on logs around a campfire. Two beds of moss and leaves lay separate from each other. The small clearing gives a glimpse of the night sky. Pinpricks of dancing lights scatter across the sky. Forest creatures make their soft, musical sounds. Sonic, giving up on his attempts at conversation with Lancelot, turns to Caliburn. A small argument sparks. Lancelot sharpens his sword, paying his former king no mind. Christian remains hidden, not wanting to intrude, afraid of the knights’ power. However, his amazement keeps him from leaving. Lancelot’s mouth forms a thin line. “If thou are lost, young knave, simply say so.” The black and red knight looks up into the trees, directly at Christian. The young prince freezes. Quickly, he trusts the invitation, taking a seat on a log. The young lion feigns offense at the nickname. “I am neither a knave, nor am I lost. I simply have nowhere else to go.” “I do not recommend keeping in our company,” Lancelot argues nonchalantly, attempting to refrain from rudeness. Christian rolls his eyes in annoyance. He stares at the flickering and spitting fire, ignoring the ebony knight. Lancelot glares at the young prince. “I meant, we do not have the ability to care for a prince, banished or not.” “Are thou trying to get rid of me?” Christian complains. “I can assure thou; I am quite delightful to be around and will be no trouble.” Lancelot scoffs. “’No trouble’? Tell me, what brought banishment upon thou?” Christian glares at the knight. Lancelot lifts his visor, allowing the prince to see a just as intense glare. Sonic and Caliburn cease arguing. The sword falls silent, simply annoyed. Sonic heaves a sigh. The blue hedgehog interrupts the feud. “Christian can stay. It sounds to me like he needs a little help with this… banishment thingy,” Sonic gives a friendly smile. “You can join our quests.” “You mean that?” Christian asks, not hiding the arrogant triumph in his voice. Lancelot sighs, crimson eyes ablaze with anger. However, he does not argue nor acknowledge. Everyone watches him, silent, waiting for his opinion. “It is not my place to question my Lord’s commands…” the ebony knight mumbles, busying himself with removing his armor, an excuse not to make eye contact. Christian grins, removing his own armor, adjusting into a more comfortable position. Sonic rushes off. Within a blink of an eye, the blue hedgehog has created a bed for the prince. Christian makes no attempt to show thanks. “You’re welcome, by the way,” Sonic says, his armor thrown aside and laying in his bed of moss. “Mind if I call ya Chris?” Christian lays in his own bed. “Yes, I mind.” Sonic chuckles. “Imma call you that anyways. ‘Night.” As the two drift to sleep, Lancelot stares up at the sky. He remains still, his expression distant, stargazing.
