He knew it was inevitable. He could feel it like a tug in his chest, pulling on his heartstrings. No, pulling on his very /soul/. Stumbling through the WindClan meadows, coughing on his own red-stained spit. He had to make it. He had to see them one last time. After moons, finally his memories had come flooding back to him. Finally he remembered. How could he tell them it was too late? Choking out the most broken sob he’d ever uttered, he nearly collapsed where he stood. He was so close. He could feel his soul dragging him towards WindClan’s camp, where his family was waiting. His breathing was ragged, he was tired. He was always tired. The chocolate-and-cream tomcat pulled himself onto shaky paws, gritting his bloodstained teeth. He would do it for them. The breeze brushed against his ear, almost like the whisper of a promise. He sighed, coughing out a laugh, flecks of red flying from his lips. /Don’t worry/, he promised. /Don’t worry, I’ll be there soon. I just have to say goodbye./ Gasping for oxygen that he knew would never enter his lungs, the tomcat stumbled into WindClan’s camp. Familiar faces, unfamiliar walls. This wasn’t home, but these cats were. StarClan, how many moons has it taken him to realize that? Evermore pining over billowing deserts and glowing crystals when his reason for living was right before his eyes. He wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. Sapphire and emerald eyes crinkled with barely suppressed tears, letting out another choked, bleeding laugh. Throat as raw as the dust and sand he used to taste during training. So many memories came flooding back to him, so many losses and so many loves. So many reasons to live, all coming back before death took him with the sweetest touch. Cats crowded around him. Siblings, in-laws, kids. Oh, his beautiful children, he would weep for them. They would continue on stronger than before, just like he did. He would smile at Voyagesail and Meanderdash, Dizzy-lilycherish too, because he knew he would see them soon. They were his inevitable, his home. He collapsed against the dirt, sapphire and emerald eyes that had seen so much, so much loss and so much love and every sunset and sunrise he knew in the end was worth it. Grief was just love in a heavy coat. Legendflower exhaled, smiling softly as warm bodies pressed against his, exchanging words of affection and love. So much love, he was surrounded by it. Overwhelming and washing over him like a blanket. He was going to fall asleep warm and filled with love. The steadfast soldier was taking his armor off, setting it aside to finally rest. He could finally rest. He had lived, died, laughed, cried, lost, and most importantly he had loved. That was what mattered in the end, wasn’t it? A single tear dripped down his bloodstained pelt. He couldn’t wait to see them again. A nose warmer than sunshine pressed against his cheek, and he knew that it couldn’t possibly belong to any one of this mortal world. Legendflower smiled, opening his eyes to the world he would be welcomed into forevermore. He turned to his family, still weeping over his lifeless body, his gaze softening. He didn’t want to leave them, but time had caught up to him in the end. They would see him again, and he would be waiting. He’d wait forever. “I’ll miss you,” he breathed to them, a star-like quality coating his pelt. Like he’d bathed in stardust and had life breathed into him again. “I’ll see you again someday.” He followed the warmth all the way to StarClan. Who it was, he may never know, whether it was Snufflesprig or Bellflowercharm or someone he had loved and lost. He had forever to figure it out. StarClan was more beautiful than ever before, something as mortal and as definable as words couldn’t possibly fathom nor explain. He was surrounded by warm bodies once again, but this time speckled with starlight. Tears cascaded down his face because he knew he was home now. He had been waiting for so, so long. “C’mon,” a familiar voice said to him. Sapphire and emerald eyes lit up like twin pools of starlight, a smile crinkling across his rejuvenated face. He’d see everyone again, he did have forever after all. They were reunited at last, his heart swelling with more love than he ever thought possible. Legendflower burst through the fields of StarClan, able to run like he did when he was a young warrior, when all his hopes in dreams were in the palm of his paw. Family members weaved around him, he could sense them in his soul. He smiled, true and bright, letting himself get lost in the rhythm of the chase. He knew could run like this forever, and he thought that just maybe he would before disappearing into the starlit undergrowth. Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.
