Missions Book 1 Prologue: Here I am, Evelyn, stuck in a giant labyrinth in the sky, sweat trickling down my face as I face the Ancient leader of evil monsters aka T.A.L. Okay, you’re probably wondering, Um,WHAT??? Okay backup to about a month ago, when it all started. Chapter one: Me, Sage of monsters, Daughter of the depths. It was a sunny, hot…very hot afternoon. My shoulder length brown hair was sticking to my neck and my pale skin was sucking the sun in. I was walking home from school, wishing I could jump into a snow pile, when I saw a purple glow in the grayish grass. I mentally slapped myself. I had veered way off course. In fact, I was in an old unexplored part of the town. All the kids in my school said that it was a giant graveyard and zombies would eat your brain if you set foot there. I believed what they said, but weirdly, I was never a bit scared of them. In some ways, I connected to them. “Before I could get farther in my mystical philosophy, I heard a rustling in the bushes. I tensed, until I heard a familiar sound. Click I sighed. “ Hi, Ethan.” My 7 year old little brother stepped out of the bush holding his favorite camera. “HIIIII!” he displayed a phony smile. I saw you wandering off without me!” he complained. “Yes, we always have to do everything together.” I said, rolling my eyes. “Anyway,” I said. “Look over there.” I pointed to the purple light. As soon as he stepped next to me, a green light blazed to life on the left of the purple one. “Whoa.” we both said at once. “JINKS!” yelled Ethan. I sighed. “Not the time.” I complained. “Let’s touch it on the count of three.” I said. “1…” Our hands hovered over the lights. “2…” We tensed. “3!” Our hands shot down. As soon as they connected with the sources of the light, they expanded and were so bright, they were like a dim version of the sun. Then, I felt something around my neck like a necklace, and everything went black. About 15 seconds later, I found myself falling with Ethan, who was clenching my hand so tight, his knuckles were white. Little circles of light were encircling our “necklaces”. I turned my neck upward and saw light filtering through a circle shaped gap that was quickly growing smaller. After a few seconds, it vanished. With a start, I realized we were falling through… well, nothing that I could see, except blackness. It seemed to be a pit. By now, I guessed we had fallen about 30 feet. After a moment, I could see the outline of- oh, no, ground. Out of nowhere, I rolled as we hit the ground, but Ethan wasn’t so lucky. He landed so hard on his foot, I thought he had broken it. I rushed over to him.Flinching, I touched my scraped up arm. I stared into Ethan’s pale green unconscious face. I felt his foot. It was a black blue shade and a little lopsided, but It didn’t feel badly damaged. “Wake up!” I murmured. I shook him. “Ahg!” He sat bolt upright. He made a painful grunt. “Where are we?” He wondered. I touched my necklace. It was a small… Dragon! “What the?!” I stumbled back.. It came off my necklace and hovered in front of me. “Hello.” I said. It cuddled me. Ethan faced his. “Wait, are you like… oh! I’ve read about this! It’s a Palismen, like a spirit guide pet. I read about them in that old myths book” Ethan said. Both dragons nodded.”You mean the one Mom and Dad told you not to read?” I asked, skeptically.
“Hey, don’t judge. It’s fine.” I sighed and turned to my dragon. “Can you light the way…” I asked it. Then I thought of a name. “Selene?” she did a flip then pointed at me with one of her tiny claws. “... I can?” I said. Selene turned into necklace form. “O-o-okay.” I turned to Ethan, who was struggling to stand. His dragon had done the same as mine. I considered what Selene had said. How could I create light? What did Selene mean? “Um…” Ethan’s voice jolted me out of my trance. I looked around. There was light… and it was coming from my hand!!! “FIRE!” I shouted, helpfully. My hand had a giant fireball in it! I didn’t feel hot, though. If anything, warm, and it lit up the place pretty well. I threw it and it seemed to be obeying my will. It floated in the air and illuminated. We were in a huge area with a bunch of patches of red stuff, and in one of them, there was a stone with odd engravings on it. It was shaped sort of like a curved tooth. It stood about 12 feet away. “Stay here.” I told Ethan. “Like I can go anywhere else,” he agreed. I moved forward slowly. As soon as I got within 5 feet of it, it twitched, then without warning zipped toward me, and like a hairclip, it clipped itself into my hair. As soon as It touched me,A surge of energy slammed into me like lightning—I staggered, heart racing, barely staying conscious. Words came into my head. It was not a sound more like a reverberation. You, Evelyn, are now sage of monsters. You are their leader or brethren. “What?” I said aloud. “Where are we?” The voice returned. Welcome to the depths, the underground world of mystery and monsters. Evil is strongest here. It is the home of all monsters alike. “Depths.” I repeated. “Wait… all monsters alike. Are there good monsters?” yes. Fight your way to them. I present you with a very rare knife. Hold out your hands. I cautiously held them out. Suddenly, a knife appeared in my hands.I picked up the sheathed knife. It felt right—like it belonged there. I strapped it to my waist. I wondered what the red stuff was. Some instinct inside of me was warning me not to touch it, but I had other ideas. I bent down and put my hand in it. It felt like mud and it seemed to be healing my bruises. I grabbed a handful and walked over to Ethan. I put some in his mouth. Instantly, his swollen ankle shrank and returned to a regular color. A new low voice came into our heads. Children of the depths. Ethan, son of the depths and Evelyn, daughter of the depths, warrior or sage of the monsters. travel west. Find the unorganized establishment of good monsters and fix it. Train and learn. the Ancient powers awaken. “West?” Asked Ethan. “West.” I confirmed. I helped him up and we started walking. The ground was rough and I kept tense, my hand on my knife, summoning fireballs now and then to light the way. After about 10 minutes, I froze. I held my hand out to stop Ethan from speaking. “Hey! Wh-” “Shhh!” I said. From behind the boulder in front of us, I could make out some evil sounding raspy voices speaking in English. “ They sound like a pig and a snake fused together!” Whispered Ethan, shifting uncertainty. I frowned. They sounded a bit raspy, but not inhuman. I peered around the rock and what I saw was quite the scene. 3 red creatures were sitting around a fire, eating what looked like raw meat. They all had pointy red ears, a pig-like snout, and ugly faces all with red eyes. Click Ethan snapped a picture. “Shhh!” I grabbed his camera. “Have you heard?” hissed one. “ Someone- a girl and her brother have entered Hyrule,” it said. For a second, I thought they knew about Me and Ethan, but then a second voice replied; “ You mean the ones that fell from the sky? There are rumors everywhere.” “ Yessss a relative of mine that lives up there reported that they overheard that their names were Emberlyn and Clark.” A third voice chimed in; “ Yessss they were spotted and they seemed to glow with radiant light.” “There is someone else like us.” I murmured to Ethan. “How do you know?” he asked. I looked at him incredulously. “ Didn't you hear them?” I said. “The voices?” he shook his head. “No. What are you talking about?” So he couldn’t hear them. This must mean something. I was so absorbed in the conversation that I didn’t notice one of them was missing. Suddenly, I heard a voice behind me. “Well, well, well… looks like we’ve got some eavesdroppers”
