Context: In 1944. Hiroo Onoda was sent by his commander to Lubang Island off the coast of Luzon island. As Hiroo was given his orders, 1 order stuck to him. Saying he will not surrender unless he is given a direct order from the commander. So Hiroo Onoda, Yuichi Akatsu, Kinshichi Kozuka, and Shoichi Shimada were sent off to the jungle. They stayed there for a long time fighting soldiers and gurella fighters. And in 1945, Japan surrendered. But the 4 never surrendered, since they did not have any communications telling them the war ended. The 4 went through tough jungle conditions, often moving one place to another like nomads. But 1 soldier could not take it anymore. Akatsu left the group and surrender himself to the Philippine police on the island. So now 3 were left. Hiroo onoda, Shoichi Shimada, and Kinschichi Kozuka. Supplies dwindled, so the 3 started to steal from villages at night, normally stealing things like, food, water, and radios. But once they were raiding a local farm. But shimada got shot and surcomed to his injuries. Now it was just Onoda and Kozuka, they still followed their tactics of gureilla warfare and still kept raiding villages. Many leaflets from planes were telling them the war ended but they saw it as allied propaganda and forged signatures of high ranking officials. But during the 1970s, Kozuka got shot by the Police in a clash, then died. So now Onoda was alone, he still kept fighting. Japan got sick and tired of him being missing and ignoring the search operations. So the Japan search parties brought with them Hiroo's older brother. Telling him to get out of the jungle and the war ended. You may think Hiroo might not recognize his voice anymore after a long separation. But he instantly recognized it, he sprinted to him but realized it could be a trap then went back to hide. Now its a process of them trying to convince him to come out. But one young Japanese who was in his 20s named Norio Suzuki, heard of this story and was always desperate to find Onoda himself. So when he got the chance to do so, he flew to the Philippines. After a long time, Suzuki actually found Onoda. Alive. Suzuki was lucky to not get killed but instead Suzuki lead Onoda out the jungle. In 1974, Onoda visited former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Still in his uniform, guns, grenades which were worn out. Realizing he cannot surrender, Marcos called the commander who was STILL alive, flew to the Philippines finally telling him to surrender. After that, Onoda was granted amnesty of his crimes by Marcos, Then Onoda flew to Brazil where he lived for a few years in the 1980s, then flew back to Japan where he teached his stories and survival skills until his death in 2014.
