“I want to show you something.” I looked at my friend in confusion. “Under a tree?” “No, silly. At the top of the tree.” My muscles tensed. I hated climbing trees, but I would do it for her. The smell of sticky sap wafted through the air as I took the first few steps. Tree bark came loose under my hands and fell down to the earth as I made my way through the winding pathway of branches. We were about halfway up when I realized something. “What if…” I shuddered. “What if a branch breaks under me?” “I just trust that it won’t.” “Trust in what? The tree not to grow broken limbs?” I laughed. “If they do break, I’ll just hold on tight.” I stopped. “I don’t think I want to go any further.” “Why?” She looked down at me, searching my face for the answer. “The view up there is amazing, trust me.” “None of these branches have broken so far, but I doubt they’ll stay that way. Besides, what if they get thinner up top?” I closed my eyes, trying not to imagine slipping from a thin branch. Don’t imagine the pain, I told myself. “How are you supposed to know if they will or won’t? Besides, the only way to find out…” she placed her hand on the next branch. “Is to climb.”
