If Ash (the purple guy) is attacking, press Z at the right time to hit the enemy. (the higher the variable number is, the more damage it does, goes up to 3.1). Same with Max (the orange guy) but you press X. (variable up to 5.1). Same buttons for dodging the enemies attacks.
