The Great Nanten War (1897–1911) Also known as: The War of the River Basin, The First World War, and The War to End All Empires By the end of the Industrial Revolution, essential resources such as coal and iron became heavily contested across Nanten. The Nanten River Basin, rich in both minerals and fertile farmland, sparked tensions as every industrial nation wanted a piece of its resources. Over the following decades, two major blocs emerged from the rivalries: The Continental League (TCL) The Nanten Pact (TNP) Both sides claimed historic and ethnic rights over territories in the Basin which was still unstable after disputes following the Elethmor War. In the years leading up to the war, Nanten resource reserves began to run dry, forcing nations such as Valdenreich to turn to exploit the basin of its resources. This caused anger among farmers and miners in the region. These tensions soon evolved into sabotage such as railway attacks, seizing grain, and the destruction of mining equipment and infrastructure. Then came the drought of 1897. Crops failed across the basin. Armed farmers began open clashes with local law enforcement and foreign industries in the region. Skirmishes over farming rights spiraled. Conferences among nations failed to organize due to national pride and old grudges against eachother. By Spring, mobilizations begin across the continent. March 20th, 1897, A border skirmish in northern Valdenreich spiraled out of control with Dornavian troops, both sides helbent on protecting its farmers. Within days, defense treaties were activated, and the continent plunged into war. Although having started over the Nanten River Basin, the war quickly dominoed across Centipa. In Vanakara, disputes over unclaimed desert lands which was already a cause of tension erupted in the east. In Surphis, rivalries between Trevandia and Thurelia sparked a surprise invasion. In just 3 years, over 30 nations had mobilized and joined the war on their respective factions. A total, industrialized war of attrition unlike anything Centipa had ever seen in its history followed suit. The Great Nanten War would drag on for 14 years before finally ending in 1911 with a catastrophic, but undoubtedly TCL victory. The cost of the war was immense. 1 in every 9 Centipans was killed, injured, or displaced Entire districts were reduced to ruin Technological progress was delayed for decades. By 1920, Centipa’s technological advancements were where they should have been in 1905 The war shattered century old empires and scarred generations. Industry, agriculture, and infrastructure all sat in ruins. Even after victory, the world remain torn. Even though peace had returned, in the shadows of post-war Nanten, new grudges and disputes began to emerge. Resentment and instability would eventually ignite the Great Aphilan War. Also known as: The Second World War or The Aphilan Storm (1963-1971)
