Wingspan 150–180 cm. Weight 1.2–2 kg. Males and females are nearly identical in coloration, with a blackish-brown back and upper wings, a white belly and underwings, and a white face with a thick blackish-brown line running through the eyes and down to the neck. They have a small crest on the back of their head. Their beak is black, and their legs are blue-gray. Characteristics that distinguish them from hawks include spicules, spines on the outside of their feet used to catch fish, an inverted fourth toe (only found in ospreys among birds of prey), nostril flaps, and dense, oily, waterproof feathers. They primarily inhabit coastal areas, but also inland lakes, ponds, wide rivers, and estuaries. They fly slowly and low over the water's surface to search for prey. During the spring and autumn migration seasons, individuals have been observed migrating inland to areas such as Nagano Prefecture. They live alone or in pairs. They are carnivorous, mainly eating fish, but also reptiles, birds, and shellfish. When they find prey, they quickly flap their wings to hover in the air, then dive down, stretching their legs near the water surface and grabbing the prey with both feet.
