Chapter 3 When Windkit awoke the next morning, more rain was falling. But still she knew it was the day. Cats crowded around the Minnowrock to see Eaglestar speak. It was clear that they could tell too. "Cats of RiverClan," Eaglestar began. "We have reached a very anticipated moment and one of my favorite duties as leader." Windkit held her breath. "Sandykit." Sandykit's eyes shone with eagerness. "Sandykit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Sandypaw. I ask StarClan to watch over you and guide you until you find in your paws the strength and courage of a warrior." He paused. "Thicketclaw, step forward." "Thicketclaw, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Mallowtail-" Mallowtail whooped. Eaglestar sighed. "-and you have proven yourself to be fierce and brave. You will be the mentor of Sandypaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to him." Sandypaw and Thicketclaw touched noses, and Eaglestar said, "Windkit, step forward. You have reached the age of six moons. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Windpaw. I wish StarClan to watch over you and guide you until you find in your paws the power and cunning of a warrior." "Jayfur, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You had received wonderful training from Graniteflight, and you have shown yourself to be skillful and corageous. You will be the mentor of Windpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to her. "Windpaw!" "Sandypaw!" "Windpaw!" "Sandypaw!" Windpaw raced over to touch noses with Jayfur. "I'm going to be the best apprentice you've ever seen! Just you wait!" Jayfur laughed. "We'll see about that." Windpaw happily padded out of camp, splashing in puddles as she went, totally ready to start learning. Jayfur started at a fast trot, but Windpaw was determined to not show her struggle to keep up. "Today, let's start with something simple," he said, closing his eyes as if he was reciting something that he had practiced for a long time. "We're going to head to the river to start your first fishing lesson. Now, the main thing to remember about fishing is to stay still, no matter how excited you are. This is important because-" Windpaw stopped suddenly. *Surely RiverClan territory isn't ^that^ small?* she thought. "Jayfur!" she called. "Is that the river?" "No, why would-oh no."Jayfur opened his eyes wide now, racing forward to the river. "All this rain has signaled the start of flood season. We need to get to camp-*now*." Windpaw took off, but questions were filling and clouding her mind like mud into a clear pool. "Why? What is it?" Pouring rain battered her face, and thunder boomed in the distance. Jayfur didn't stop. "The camp is really close. We might need to evacuate within the quarter-moon if the floods already rose this far." "WHAT?" This time, she completley halted. "Evacuate the camp just because of some *water*? We're RiverClan!" Jayfur turned back to her, his eyes wide with fear. "Please just keep moving." Windpaw noticed the desperation in his voice and nodded. They both started moving again, and he whispered, "My mother is gone because of the floods one year. I was just older than you. The Clan can't have that again. I won't let it." When the pair entered camp, Jayfur ran straight to Eaglestar's den. Soft murmuring became more distinct as Windpaw listened in. "This is certainly something to be aware of, Jayfur." "Thank you, Eaglestar. And I'm sorry for panicking in front of my apprentice. I just..." "Don't worry about it. Silverstone was greatly missed. You did fine." "We can check it again tommorow." A sigh, and then "All right."
