The Jack o' lantern originated in Ireland from an old folktale about a man named Stingy Jack, who tricked the Devil and was then cursed to wander the earth eternally. To light his way, he placed a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip, creating the first "Jack-o'-lantern". We started to carve them to keep him away from our homes. They are originally Irish, and they started carving them in pumpkins because they were easier to carve.
