I wanted John to look more rugged, like he hides his Identity. He actually has a Bounty on his head since before he was banished, he did something that we won't be told for now. (Jovath got rage baited so hard he put a bounty on his son's head :skull :pray:) The reason he wears the gloves with chains is because he got into an accident and his hands got burnt, like, really-really bad.
