I walked to my locker, number 126 and punched in the code. I opened it and dumped my stuff in and picked my schedule out of my backpack. As I skimmed through it, another kid, short with a dark pixie cut, walked up to the locker beside mine and struggled to get it to open. “Darn it!!! Stupid locker..” they said while they kicked the ground. “Do you need help?” I asked carefully. “Yes!!! Can you open lockers? My middle school didn’t have them so I never got the hang of it…” They asked me with a pleading look, “My locker code is 13, 43, 38” “Okay, 13…43…38” I said while turning the thingy on their locker. It unlocked on the first try and I opened it with a flourish “Voila! My name is Ellia, she/her. What’s yours?” I asked them “Cool! I’m Alex, they/them pronouns please!” Alex replied. “Nice name! Whose your homeroom?” I asked. “Mrs.Brunner, how about you?” They told me with a raised eyebrow. “Same! Want to walk together?” I asked, widening my smile even more. “Yes please” And so we went to class. I pushed open the door to the room and looked inside. All of the kids were in small groups already and chatting away clustered like bees to honey around desks. I saw a few people sitting alone, but one of them stood out to me. Adrian was in my homeroom! I was about to say hi, when the projector flashed on with what looked like a seating arrangement projected on. “I'm Mrs.Brunner, this is the seating chart for the semester,” A voice from the back of the room said. I saw a woman, around 30 or so, standing there in the back with a calm and yet slightly condescending smile. “C'mon, let's see if we're next to each other!” I said with a tug to Alex's sleeve. I stood on my tip toes to see the board over the sea of teenagers in front of me. “Yes! Next to each other!” I said in triumph. Alex smiled back and we went to find our seats. With a second look at the screen I noticed that Adrian was right behind me. And the name of the person in front of me was oddly familiar. Fox Delgado… Oh! That's the name of the redhead from my elementary school! I realized. I internally hoped that it was her, she was a kind girl and it would be nice to see her again. “Hey Ellia, can we compare schedules?” Alex asked me, holding out their schedule. “Yeah sure! Oh wait, you should meet Adrian first, hey Adrian! This is my friend and locker neighbor, Alex, Alex, this is my house neighbor Adrian,” I introduced them. Adrian seemed shy at first, but he warmed up quickly and we all compared schedules. I had math with both of them, Ela with Alex, science with Adrian, social studies alone, and we all had the same specials and electives. “Alright, I'm glad you guys are getting along, but I need to tell you about how this school works,” Mrs. Brunner said. I internally sighed and put my schedule in my desk. As I looked up again I saw my other neighbor, Fox. My jaw almost dropped. She was stunning.
