The meeting was set at 3:15, I locked my apartment door and grabbed my car keys. It was a chilly day like around 54 degrees, leaves where turning red trees high up, the sky was very cloudy with shiny blinding bursts of sun light outlining the clouds. My hair blew a bit in the wind. I took a second to look at all of this then I went to my car and drove to the office. "Miss. Lee what brings you here today?" "I have an appointment at 3:15." She slowly checked me in on her old computer slightly yellow from age with chunky keys. She had white puffy hair with lines of sliver, slim dark red glasses and green eyes. "Just wait a second." The clinic was pretty deserted 3 seats had maybe 1 or 2 people working there. The lights for the main office where pretty dim. There where a few magasins like the ones I read as a teenager with pretty young-looking people on the covers and lots of advice on how to and be cool. There was a glitching old tv that was advertsing shampoo to look nice, and it was showing clips of the news. The floor had a rug with dark blue and red engraved in it like the ones in elementary school. Once we where doing a bake sale everybody brought goodies or bon bons as they like to say in French to raise money for the school roof. One kid, my friend named Madison Janes was algeric to bananas and eggs. Madison Janes was a tad bit native and quiet, she looked pretty shocked most of the time and didn't do well in school, she was yelled at a lot by teacher teased by students in the halls sometimes but mainly people avoided her. She wasn't really seen and defienlty not heard. She was often called Lemon Ink because well because she always carried a bottle of invisable ink and offered some to people when she was mentioned of course or more commonly the girl who was friends with Zoey ,the Chinese one. Once she told me her mother was a crazy, looking back on it now her mother was likey a schizophrenic, Maddison didn't have a dad or siblings and she was home schooled first grade until 6th grade the year this happened. The class clown Ace Walker thought It would be funny to bake ummm.. what is it I forgot but he thought it would be funny to bake something and say it had no bananas and eggs when it really did. Day of the bake sale Madison Janes and I were talking we made a bet to try all of what people baked and she ate Ace's food and she threw up. The next day she left me a note in invisible ink made of lemon juice saying "Goodbye. Thank you so much you really don't know what you done for me!" with a pretty happy picture the type a kindergarten would draw of both of us together and a rainbow and lots of stars and I never saw her again. At 4:40 I was unraveled in my thinking. "Ms. Lee come in please!" a cheerful voice said. The room was avrgage for a eye doctor's office. She was a large lady with pale skin and honey-bonde hair and blue eyes. She had a kindergarden teacher to her new pupils on the first day extrior "Hello i'll be your eye doctor, call me Martha Frintz!" and she gave me a big warm smile I immediately felt comfortable. "Hello! I'm here for my eye appointment!" and I returned the smile back. "Oh yes sorry! Sometimes it takes a bit! Don't worry the appointment will be finished faster then you could say lickity-lick-spit!" I tried to hold back my giggles but ultimately failed. She kept on a big toothy grin that felt truly genuine. "Now time for testing, just put your eye on the resting spot and look at the image!" The image was a barn house "Good now time for the other eye!" I followed her intuctions. "Do you know that during summers I used to go to my gandparents barn house there were a few other kids one who we always made jelwery with, of course after chores. What did you do over the summer as kid?" with a calm and welcoming tone like a child-story narrator. The first exrercise was finished. "Oh umm... well I used to always help my mom make Kimchi and I played basket ball quite a bit and there was swim team but most of the time I just hung out and lissened to music." "What were your favorite songs?" "Ya know 90s music what ever I could get my hands on." She chukled "Me and my cousins used to always have sleepovers every week and we had a special code to sneek out. Our code was of cut out paper symbols, heart for yes, eye for becareful, star for no. Did you have something like that?" I took a second to think about this, wow my eye doctor sure was strange, "No I never," I took a second to think "But I often dreamt of it." She smiled again "Do you have imaginary friends? I did one called Boxer when I was young maybe Buster I forgot, memory is a bit cloudy these days." "Well yes a few one was called kiki, another Rosey and Jigi. Lots and lots I used to always make up stories about them in my mind." It warmed me up inside to say those fimilar names I was embarrassed because
because I overshared. "Sorry for oversharing." "No worries." I used to have one imaginary friend called Lover she was was a copy of me who was a big sister a bit stonger, confident and outgoing more gutsty. "Anyways time to go to the other room, when you get there put your chin on the stand the green." We walked into the other room she tested my eyes again. And I asked “Why did you become an eye doctor?” She stood a second “Well I-” She took a deep breath, “When I kid I had a older sister her name was Mary. She was often teased at in school she was quiet unlike me a bit strange she took in everything around her most of all she loved color, she loved seeing. She was an observer. Quiet. She was a stremstress she made pattern colorful dresses. She was a bit like Lemon ink. I know thats a bit weird but- ” “No its not. Keep going.” I returned the smile she gave me. She sighed “One day when she was 16 unfortunately went blind when a tree branch poked her eye out and the other poked out by a needle.” “Thats terrible!” “So from that day on I wanted to help people see better, live better. So I became an eye doctor. I hoped I could bring joy to the world help people see the beautiful world. Thats my purpose in life.” “Whoa.” thats all I could say. I think Masdison would agree with that. She was finished with my appointment by then it was 7:30 “I have to get going. Thank you!” “Come back tomorrow!” she said. I would never forget that visit to the doctor. I guess that's all we need other then water, food shelter and warmth to see each other and to hear each other. The world is something to be felt. There's so much I want to say that can't be fit into a thousand pages about Maddie and Lemon ink and how we all need to see eye to eye, how kindness can make someones smile wider then the Nile, fariy tales and how fake can be broung to life how story's are the most human thing and Merci for taking time out of your short existence to read my story. but i'll keep it at this: Au revoir, a beintot! Tout la heure, monde! Pour l'aime la monde. Au revoir la monde pour novelle.
