The Battle at Sunrock (Update) Mature audiences should be implied. Echoing cries of desperation washed over me, cleansing me in vast sorrow. With beheaded warriors across the field, it became obvious that I was alone; that none of my brethren had made it. Through gritted teeth, eyes threatening to glass, I yelled prominently, “Who claims cowardice? Who exceeds it?” A sudden yelp came from behind me, when I locked eyes with a frightened Extraordinary. They were a cat of fine intellect, black fur soft as a crow’s feather, and part through with a streak of snowy white. Their tail was cut near where it began, in a frightened state of unbalance. Lines of blood was spat from their mouth, coughing out howls and begs, as they sat, still slouching. Paws unsteady, their name hushed and mumbled, I knelt down to his side. “Truce?” breathed Sole, no more than a whisper, his jade eyes glinting. The pathetic smile of the unfortunate being was genuine, full of pity. I shook my head and stood up. With their lifted head in sad acceptance, and my sharped blade merciless, sour liquid blossomed from his neck, crowning me victor in new blood. A dirty plush of black and white lay next to the body, easing up to the aching corpse. I ran through the crimson field, the pale yellow grass darkening with my step, and raced for a lone tree in the forest. Warm seasons forgotten, the light breeze made me shiver in my battered clothes, open wounds left vacant and cold. I crouched down, letting the last of the sun engulf me as it set, and after long moments of silence only broken by a river, I dug into my bag. Between the loose brown leather, I always carried flint, whether it be enough to burn underbrush, or to simply light a torch. As the flint sparked, the grass began to catch fire. In the light ocean of the moon, the blaze was almost like a separate battle, ultimately ending in the flame's deepened orange glow. Squinting back at the embered and crisp bodies, I stepped past burning corpses I knew the names of. One was Emerald, who had tried to welcome me into this wondrous city as an animal, introducing me to the town that laid beyond the dirt road path. She fancied books, reading them in furred paws. Even so, she had other's blood in her palms. Everyone did. The cats usually stuck together, but all the unicorns made were terrifying creatures, hooves squishing the fairies and bugs that cast underground. At one point, the dogs had tested friendliness towards us, but they couldn't rid of the human blood oozing from their mouths. Honestly, we all could have been allies, taking over other empires, and universally expanding. But the night they were first taken had changed my mind. Stupidity eventually took over my common sense, but only after months of my siblings and parents unreturned. Impulse led me into the thick overgrowth of trees; to the terrifying brutality no one can forget. I saw my mother, the adventurer she was, and the bloodied body she sadly became, being eaten by one of the dogs. Streaks of red from others like my father led deeper into the foliage, but I never found their remains. That was when I first found Sunrock, walking aimlessly and desperate for food, my wooden blade dulled and refusing to cut anything. I snuck into town through an untied and empty tent, finding sharpened steel and fish from a ruckus stream. From a ways away, I heard a rally near the front of Open Ground. “Hello, young ones, to a place where imagination is the limit. I am Emerald, leader of the Extraordinaries. Welcome to Sunrock. Here, you can be an Extraordinary. Us Extraordinaries are apart from others, unlike humans. We are unique. Our ways are different than theirs. You may struggle at first, trying to socialize with human beings. However, if you join us, we will care for you, and form a great bond with you. So join us, and we can work together.” Stamped feet and roaring crowds showed alliance. They seemed cordial, but they valued humans as less. We tried to bond with them directly, then it was prohibited. Any threatening human they came across would die as an enemy, not as a famed ally turned rogue. Any human-extraordinary companionship was cause for ban from Sunrock. Sneaking out a few books from their shredded library, I learned how to read and write in English, and was able to communicate with others who agreed with me on my sour opinions. No matter how much they wanted us to be, we were not one of them. I am not an Extraordinary, and I won't attempt loyalty. Her offer always hung above me, though, closing off most other options of faction. I am Del, the human and the soldier, never to become extraordinary. Thanks for reading.
