Half a century ago on this day, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company would sink below the waves of Lake Superior, carrying about 26,000 tons of taconite ore pellets, along with her 29 crew. A strong gale had come early that year, and instead of heading to its destination of Zug Island, she and the SS Arthur M. Anderson attempted to reach Whitefish Bay. However, 15 miles from said bay, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald would slip beneath the waves, never to be seen again.
@amtrakman4014 Gordon Lightfoot (RIP) Commemorated to the 29 crew of the "Eddie Fitz".
