Grasses are flowering plants characterized by narrow, linear leaves, hollow jointed stems called culms, and fibrous root systems. Unlike many plants, grass grows from the base rather than the tips, which allows it to regrow after being cut, grazed, or damaged. This adaptation makes grass highly resilient and well suited to constant disturbance. Grasses reproduce mainly through seeds, often produced in clusters called spikelets. Many species also spread through underground stems (rhizomes) or above‑ground runners (stolons), helping them form dense ground cover. They are found in almost every climate, from tropical savannas and temperate meadows to wetlands and high-altitude regions. Grass plays a critical role in ecosystems. It prevents soil erosion by holding the ground together, supports food webs by feeding herbivores, and contributes significantly to oxygen production. For humans, grasses are essential: major crops such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, and oats are all grasses and provide most of the world’s calories. Grass is also used for lawns, grazing land, building materials, and biofuels.
