Xinhai has fired 48 non-nuclear ICBMs at Mothron, as well as hundreds of much more cost-effective long-range high-payload ballistic missiles. On top of this volley, Xinhai has locked down its airspace entirely and has begun prepping long range bombers and midair refueling aircraft for further strikes on Mothron. Curfews are being enforced across the country and a media blackout has been imposed to protect OPSEC.
The point of the cheaper missiles is to overwhelm and deplete mothron's air defenses so that the bigger missiles can make it through, but even if mothron chooses to only shoot down the largest missiles they'll get massively damaged
