this one is like a little after BOTW ends Setting: Rebuilt Hyrule Library, late afternoon. The library still smelled like wood varnish and soft parchment-new shelves stretching up toward the vaulted ceilings, gaps still waiting to be filled where lost volumes were gone for good. Light poured through the western windows, spilling onto tiled floors as Zelda traced a familiar path through the stacks. She had no real intention of stopping. Until- "Link?" she called suddenly. He turned, already clutching a thick book about post-Calamity botany. "Yeah?" She was standing in front of the children's section-hand frozen halfway to a vividly illustrated spine. Gold embossing in loopy script spelled out: "The Calamity: A Hero's Tale" Zelda blinked. She slowly pulled it off the shelf. "This can't be real," she murmured. Link walked over, eyebrows raised. "You have to see this," she said. "It's... it's a picture book." They sat cross-legged on the carpet by a little chairs clearly meant for smaller, messier beings. Zelda opened the first page. A pastel drawing showed a tiny version of Hyrule Castle surrounded by clouds and sparkles. Cartoon drawn Champions stood heroically around Princess Zelda in comically oversized armor. Link, rendered with enormous blue eyes and a sword bigger than his entire torso, stood just behind her, expressionless. "Oh dear," Zelda said softly. Link was already biting back a grin. Zelda read aloud: "Once, in the Kingdom of Hyrule, lived a wise princess and her brave knight." Link tilted his head. "I mean.... technically true." "They traveled the land with their mighty team-Daruk the Strong, Urbosa the Bold, Mipha the Gentle, and Revali the... Um..." Zelda snorted. "Why does his face look like he's falling off the page?" Link leaned in. "Maybe the artist had opinions." They turned another page. The imagery got darker-still cute, but now with shadowy swirls and dramatic lightning bolts shaped like angry scribbles. The Champions were drawn slightly faded now. Zelda's illustration looked sad, hair drooping like a wilting plant. Then- They reached the panel with Link collapsing, sword skewed behind him like a fallen feather. Zelda blinked. "Princess Zelda thought she had lost her only love." "_Excuse me?" she said. Link choked. "Wait-what?" Zelda stared at the page. Her cartoon-self was sobbing in a sparkly puddle, framed by hearts and raindrops and a weird rainbow coming from her forehead. "I-no-this is incorrect," she said firmly. Link raised both brows. "Seems pretty dramatic." "I was distraught," she admitted. "But-only love'? That's-it's exaggerated." Link squinted. "Are you sure?" "I mean..." She started flipping rapidly toward the end. "We weren't exactly-that's not what it -oh godesses." The final page was a watercolor scene of the castle courtyard-Zelda and Link in matching outfits, holding hands beneath a banner that read: "In the end, the couple was reunited, and love won the day!" Zelda sat very still. Her mouth opened. Then closed. Link cleared his throat gently. "Should we frame this?" Zelda whipped her head toward him, scandalized. "LINK" He tilted the book slightly. "But we were reunited." "Yes-but not because of love! I mean not like that! We were just-friends." "Best friends?" Link offered casually. "Obviously," she muttered. "A little romantic?" "I-barely! And I didn't even-It's-That's not the point!" She slammed the book shut and walked away with red all over her pretty little face, while Link laughed at her.
