[ now that you're gone ] confusion, and fear. those were the only things daisydarling could feel in the moment. her heart was in her stomach. paw over her maw. where were her kits? she had only come to the apprentice's den to see her kits. her babies. surely she knew each of their faces, after all, most of the apprentices were hers. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... daisydarling counted, over and over again, only to come up to 6 every time. "no, there couldn't be 6!" she told herself, as her eyes roamed over once more, her breath shaky. where was trickpaw?! where was pumpkinpaw?! daisydarling backed out quickly, with a panicked cry, "trickpaw! pumpkinpaw!", with only her voice greeting her from the void. the same void that she had found her babies under, and the patter of her paws hitting the ground. "this is some kind of prank. they'll come out laughing, and harass me for falling for it." daisydarling said to herself. though they never arrived. her kits. no sounds of their laughter. no sudden pitter of their paws, before they knock her over. over the night, her cries grew into desperate wails, as she continued searching, even leaving camp in an attempt to find her kits. she must have looked like a crazed cat walking with the way she was howling out their names, steam rolling up from her eyes. tears that were never bound to fall, although at the moment, she wished they would. dawn came around, and by then, the crying she-cat had only come back to camp, voiceless, and silently weeping. falling over only moments later in misery, eyes closing shut. her kits. her babies. missing. she tried. she tried so hard. yet she couldn't find them. was she to blame? for not keeping a close enough eye on them? as she drifted off to sleep, she only asked one question towards herself; what was she supposed to do now that they were gone?
