THIS ALBUM IS NOT MINE!! I WILL BE RELEASING A CHRISTMAS ALBUM OF MY OWN SOON BUT FOR NOW, HERE IS SOME JAMES LEYLAND KIRBY PIG MAGIC TO HELP GET YOU THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS!! What is this album? This album is a Christmas-themed plunderphonics project from V/Vm, A.K.A. James Leyland Kirby, who you may know by his alias The Caretaker, creator of Everywhere at the End of Time. Unlike The Caretaker, which was more retrospective and somber, the earlier V/Vm moniker is more humorous and crass, "butchering" popular songs at the time to create a nauseous audio mess. Pretty cool! This particular album messed up popular Christmas songs and carols to create a desolate, uneasy feeling in the listener. I love the effect James applies to these songs. It really is interesting how pitch shifting a song can change its context and mood entirely. What is V/Vm Test Records? V/Vm Test Records is a now-retired record label by James that specializes in the best of the worst of the worst of the best. In other words, it's a group of like-minded individuals similar to James (some of them being James himself under different aliases) who similarly create intentionally outsider music. More well known artists who collaborated with this label include Kid606 and Boards of Canada. What is the purpose of this album? To show that Christmas is dead, apparently, according to the liner notes which you can see in the project. Personally, I don't exactly agree (I might be a little biased, since I'm Christian) and while I do feel like James has a very nihilistic view of life, I understand why with this particular subject. Most (key word: MOST) Christmas music nowadays is either recycled or just straight doo doo poo poo, and I understand being disgruntled with the commercialization of this holiday. But in my opinion, it still brings joy to many, and brings joy to me (particularly with the family aspect and, of course, Jesus!) That being said, I still enjoy this album and its pillaging twist on a beloved tradition. This entire album screams counterculture and I love it. So without further ado, enjoy these utterly mutilated Christmas carols of woe and misery. Happy Holidays.
