TW: Sad themes, implied death —— Gone. The young. Always gone first. The eager excitement of a partially developed mind might seem to be at fault. Maybe it is. Or maybe it’s the unfortunate circumstance of a pruner coming in too fast. Cutting clean through before they even realize it. The sapling hits the ground hard and fast before anyone can stop it. A child. Lost or otherwise injured, not able to live the same ever again. First Miragemist: Unable to fly from a small accident. Fog had to learn not to let the dying plants poison his thoughts. Never get too close. Never let the plants get too wild. Never look away for too long. Nourish the sprout ever so slightly so they can grow. Let them find sunlight and shade. Water and drought. But Fogwhisper stopped nourishing the plant. He thought there would never be another plant to nourish. He was wrong. And when it mattered he didn’t plant the sprout snugly. It wasn’t planted with care. Buried just deep enough to grow and grab the ground with its roots. Stay strong and flexible. The seed was hardly cared for, buried in cold soil and not padded in the slightest. A light breeze could uproot it. And so it did. How it happened: Taken only a moon after becoming an apprentice. Could hardly fly. And the unstable dirt. Unable to hold its own weight without the growth of a sprout to uphold it. And the ground crumbled. So did the sprout. And now Fogwhisper stood at the edge of the dirt. Ironic that now that Mirage was gone, he was truly buried. Careful. Stable. But he would never grow. And Fogwhisper realized something. Seeds don’t always die from being uprooted. They can suffocate too. And the seed Whisp planted for himself was so far down it couldn’t breathe. Entrapped in the darkness, ever listening. It wasn’t the seed of the ever-standing tree it once was. Or the one full of life and pride. This was the seed belonging to a long vine or thorns. Thorns that would once day show themselves and their vulnerability. After all, it was the elements that out them under here, and the elements that would dig them out.
