It was once completely ocean, then land forms were made, and broken, making and forming super-continents. There were four super-continents, the forth being Pangea. When the glaciers swept through during the Ice Age they flattened every thing in their icy path. Mountains are formed by two continental plates colliding. Earth has many systems and cycles, the water cycle, the rock cycle, the carbon cycle, and the nitrogen cycle. Some systems are called spheres. There are 4 spheres: Biosphere, Geosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere. All the cycles and spheres interact with each other. Hawaii formed when the pacific plate moved over a hot-spot underwater, that started piling up cooled igneous rock over hundreds of years, creating islands. As the oceanic plate moved, so did the islands, letting new islands form. The hot-spot is currently under Hawaii's big island.
