He communicates only in morse code and only 2 other engines on the railway can receive his messages, those being Rebecca and his translator Samantha. Originally he was a regular 4-8-4 built for the Union Pacific in 1934. Following the Soviet (keep in mind this is fictional) annexation of America in 1975 and the purchase of the Union Pacific Railway by the ever-expanding, government-run Demo-Sovo Railway (DSR), Tim was transferred to the DSR and was sent to work on a rail line connected to the rest of the DSR by only one bridge, along with 3 other engines. The bridge collapsed in 1981, and for whatever reason, the bridge was neither rebuilt nor destroyed, and the switch track was never converted to a regular track. Over time, the DSR rail line split from the DSR and became the Virginia & Appalachian Railroad (V&A). Everything changed in 1984 when an inspection of the train incorrectly labeled Tim's brakes as perfectly fine and not in need of repairs. A month later, he went straight off the collapsed bridge due to faulty brakes. Tim survived, but the incident crushed his face and tender. Tim was put in storage and never mentioned again until he was sold to the DSR in 1999 because the railway he used to work for was severely financially struggling and collapsed a year later. The DSR never reclaimed the V&A rail line. Tim was rebuilt in late December of 2025 and early 2026. Because he no longer had a face, Tim was repurposed into a tunnel bore and given a telegraph to communicate. His tender was scrapped and he was given a new one.
