Some people move through life Blind sighted Not by darkness, But by the things they think they see. By stereotypes, By appearances, By assumptions whispered to them By the past, By stories told a thousand times Until they feel like truth. But the world is rarely what it seems. It is not simply black and white, Not cleanly divided into Good and evil, Right and wrong. There are colors in between— Shades we forget to look at When we trust the first picture Painted for us by others. Some things may be tilted, More common for one gender, One ethnicity, One religion, One sexuality But never limited to just one. Pain does not stay loyal to a single group. Anyone can bleed. Anyone can break. People can be brave and terrified In the same breath. Strong in the daylight, Shaking in the dark. We forget this When our minds take shortcuts, When we pretend the world can be sorted Into tidy, labeled boxes That keep us feeling safe. Peer pressure, Lies, Hurting, Bullying— All of it weaving itself into chains That wrap around fragile hearts Until they crack. And from these cracks spill Broken trust, More hurt, More fear, More lies— A cycle as old as humanity, Hurt people hurting people, Passing down their bruises Like unwanted heirlooms. And still, people protect their Friends, Family, Partners, Coworkers, Teachers Anyone they have tied their trust to. They cling to memories, To the shining moments, To inside jokes, To shared histories Letting the good times Blind them to the shadows. They mute the warnings, Blur the red flags, Erase the doubt, Because love can be a filter, Loyalty a fog, Memory a shield. So they walk through life Blind sighted, Seeing only the version of truth They can survive with Never realizing how much They’re missing, How much they’re excusing, How much pain hides Just outside their field of view.
