FRQ (Frequently Asked Questions): (Please read everything, even if you've led before!) 1. What is SMC? Scratch Music Camp is a biannual virtual writing camp which runs in February and September. This is a great place for members of the music community to meet other, young talented musicians and singers on scratch. Whether you've never touched an instrument or have been playing since you were little, you'll always have a place here <3 2. When is my application due? 11:59 PM UTC on January 8th. We also require a text version of your answers by the deadline. Please post this version in the Scratch Forums. 3. When will (co)leaders be chosen? After applications close, the hosts will determine and notify leaders over the next few days. Co-leaders will be chosen by leaders through offers between then and the 13th of January 4. What are the differences between leaders and co-leaders? Leaders have more responsibility than cos. They are 'in charge' of a cabin, ensure equity in terms of tasks within their own cabin, and make more decisions regarding cabin theme and development. 5. How do co-leaders work? Applications not chosen to be leaders will automatically be open to being chosen as co! You are not allowed to advertise your application to the chosen leaders — we do encourage this behaviour. If you aren't selected as a co-leader, we advise that you keep your app shared regardless - sometimes situations later on call for leaders to need to choose another co! 6. What are the cabin names? Cabins will be decided by app interest, however, since we are a fairly new camp, here are some name ideas: - pop, rock, classical, choral, alt, rap, contemp etc. You aren't required to play music in the genre of your cabin! It's just a name--please keep in mind that you can play in any genre during camp <3 7. I've never been a leader in SMC before. Will more experienced people be chosen over me? We mainly choose by the four main criteria of answer quality, honesty, creativity and effort. Past behavior is also considered, but ultimately a lack of leading experience will not disadvantage you! 8. How will I know if my application has been seen? I’ll get a notification when you remix, so no need to link your app in the comments! 9. Are collaborative apps allowed? Collaborative applications, where two or more people apply through one app, are not allowed. If you use anything by someone other than yourself, remember to give clear credit in your project description! 10. Can I choose cos before I get accepted? No - you may look at apps in advance but you can’t ask them to co with you or make a pact with friends to lead together. If you do get accepted, guidelines will be given on how to choose co-leaders. 11. What is the purpose of the word cap on applications, and what counts towards it? Having guidelines for word count both encourages applicants to be more concise, and makes applications easier for hosts to read and judge. Just the answers, NOT any other writing in the app is counted. If your app is formatted like an interview, where there's a story woven in with the answers, that will count towards the word cap :) 12. Can I get an extension on my app? Extensions are given on an individual basis, and only for unforeseen circumstances (tech issues, family emergency etc.) Only 24 hour extensions will be granted, after there are 48 hours left until the deadline. You still must provide your answers through a forum post by the original deadline! ^^ Four weeks is enough time 13. Do I have to play an instrument/sing? While it is hoped for and suggested that you have some kind of experience or passion with at least one of the above, as stated in question one, neither is required 14. What if I have a question? If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask a host on one of our profiles (, , , and ) and we will do our best to answer any questions you may have! <3
