Prologue Taunswell Forest was on fire. Campers were running everywhere but no one could seem to find an exit. The flames were surrounding them. Nicholas was gathering people near the river, but it was almost dried up. It wasn't enough to save all these people, and he couldn't carry them all out. If he stayed much longer he might not be able to escape. He went back into the fire searching for any more people. He heard crying and turned around to see a little girl probably about five backed up against a rock surrounded by flames. She was crying and calling for her family. Nicholas carried the girl out of the fire, but when he neared where the river should be all that was left was fire, smoke, and ash. The fire was spreading rapidly, and he knew he had to get out now. Nicholas had failed. At least he could save one child. It's going to be ok. I'm sorry I couldn't save your family he whispered as he brought her out of the fire. It's best if you don’t remember this. He put his hand on her head and concentrated. He wished he could take the girl with him but he would just end up endangering her. Thinking sadly about how she would never see her parents again he draped his cloak over her to keep her warm and vanished leaving the little girl where she would be found. Up on a cliff a little distance away someone was watching. He will regret betraying me, she said and turned to leave. No one attempts to ruin my plans and gets away with it. Especially this one.
