Once Annican had made an elaborate speech on why he should go, he practiced it until he could give it backwards if he wanted to. He brought the letter downstairs and searched for Everett. He knew that Everett was usually in the basement, making carvings out of wood, so that's where he checked first. BINGO! He was there, creating a sea turtle with his carving knife. “Hey, um, dad, could I go to an academy?” His father looked up from his in the works carving. “Of course you can!” Everett stood and crossed the room to Annican. "Which one is it?” Annican paused, then threw away his whole speech. “Well….. you see for yourself” he then handed over the letter. His dad read it and looked up at him, Annican didn't see anger, or stress, not even a bit of fear! He saw…. Pride and excitement, happiness even. Everett hugged him tightly. “This is amazing! I'm so happy for you! We can go out shopping for your stuff! I will pack your water bottle! Oh! Remember that blue jay feather you found and begged me to keep? You can take that as your feather! Why would you need a feather?! Who knows at this point!” he hugged Annican even tighter. Who let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding. Really? I can go! That's amazing! Let's go tell Dad!” Everett smiled at Annican. “Sure, while you do that, I'll fill up your waterbottle! After all, tomorrow is the day you leave! Oh also, happy birthday Annican! I got you a gift and a card, I'll give them to you after you speak with your father!” Annican felt a burst of happiness. Someone remembered! How grand! He hurried up out of the basement and onto the main floor, where he stumbled into James. “Dad says I can go! He's getting my waterbottle ready for tomorrow and says he's going to take me shopping for the book! Remember that blue jay feather I found? That's the feather I'm going to take! I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!” His father looked at him disapprovingly. “I told you no. Why did you ask Everett when you already asked me? That's final Annican! You're not going!” “but dad wants me to go! He was so excited for me!” His father sighed. He did that a lot. “Fine, I'll go talk to your father about this.” Annican felt a rush of triumph. He was really going! He had some thinking to do, though. What element did he want in a bag? What did that mean? Well, he knew there were elements like water, or fire, things in nature. If he asked for earth, would they give him a chunk of dirt? That would be funny. Well, if it were elements like that, maybe he should put some real thought into it. If he could shapeshift, he had no doubt they could put fire in a bag and not have it set on fire… but would the magnificent flames still hurt him? Those were the things he had to think about. Water was too normal. Fire might burn him. Earth….. did he really want a chunk of dirt that badly? No. Lightning? If fire hurt him, this would really hurt him. Perhaps he would go with…. What? Everything would either be too normal, or might hurt him. So he would think that they wouldn't hurt him. In this case, he would go with lightning. That would be cool. Or what if because he technically already had a power they wouldn't give him his provided element!? He sighed, hopefully this would work itself out. He heard his father, Everett call up to him excitedly, and he raced back down the stairs to see them waiting for him at the dining room table, a big green and silver bag with a card sticking out of it lay on the table, along with a flat, rectangular package that had lightning themed wrapping paper. He stepped down the stairs just when they both yelled “YOU CAN GO!”
