(please read the whole thing tysm) I’m done . I’m so freaking done I’m not letting the world go dystopian over this . Let’s start here ; we all know about AI . It takes jobs - it steals from artists , writers , graphic designers , coders , moderators , and it is inaccurate almost ALL the time . It’s already clear that the AI isn’t entirely ready for the world . But it does have some uses , like in the medical field . This does NOT include flagging harmful content , and especially not for “keeping kids safe” online . That’s right , I’m talking about age verification laws . This situation was likely brought to light by Roblox and their announcement of including age verification to block some features for younger users of the site . This is pretty hypocritical of them , “protecting the kids” , because they’re still letting a lot of bad things happen on the site and are even advocating for it . But this problem isn’t just for Roblox . It’s for Youtube , and Disco , and the pinning app (who advocates for it) , and Google , and even your TEXTING applications (like iMessage) . It affects EVERYONE , not just kids , and takes away any privacy and freedom you once had , on the glorious world wide web . So what is age verification ? Age verification is the identification of someone’s age using a variety of methods , likely 100% verified by AI . These methods may include confirming credit cards and IDs , or face scans/estimations (most inaccurate) , as they’re the most common . This will be implemented into social media websites/applications where about 1/3 of the social media’s content is deemed unsafe for people under 18 (Scratch may therefore be exempt from age verification , but we’ll see .) . Most companies are using face scans to train their AI models , and all of this data is harvested and stored by the company and government asking for it . This is therefore a huge risk for the companies that choose to store this data for security leaks that expose millions of identities of individuals that have them sold and used by many , causing chaos . We’ve already seen that Disco has been subject to such a leak very recently - and many companies have had similar situations happen , putting many people in danger . This is also a huge opportunity for governments to swoop in on the opportunity and silence anyone that speaks out against them , eliminating free speech . We have already seen this happen in the UK , where age verification has been implemented . An elderly woman has been arrested for a remark about a certain war and her support for the affected country on her social media - since it’s so easy to trace a profile to the person using it via age verification and the data shared and stored by the company . There has been many more since then , any many more to come across the world . For a lot of people that hasn’t had their country put this law into effect , it’s coming for you . It’s not just for the UK , and it’s NOT for the kids . On January 1st of 2025 , many US states are putting the law into effect for the App Store and Google Play Store plus social media gates , and Malaysia is using the UK’s law on that day . The UK and Australia has already been affected , France is making efforts to put this into effect , Youtube has been slowly picking out more and more users to verify their ages since September , and Roblox will roll out it’s age verification in early January . And this ? This is just the beginning . So speak out while you still can , if you can vote then vote against age verification , email your local lawmakers to block this act . The only reason companies won’t or will comply is for money . The only reason governments are doing this is for control . Fight . Against . This . I’m not fear-mongering . I’m spreading the truth . I’m advocating for a not-dystopian future . I’m protecting our privacy and rights . I’m fighting - for us .
