Hello! This project is all about coastal defences and coastal engineering. Introduction: Villages in the coastal zone are often at risk, the coastlines can be eroded or flooded by the sea. Therefore, there are a range of structures that can prevent that. They are categorised into Hard Engineering and Soft Engineering. -Hard Engineering involves strong, man-made structures. Examples include gabions and seawalls. -Soft Engineering has a more environmentally-friendly approach that involves natural processes. Examples include beach nourishment and dune restoration. Instructions: -Your goal in this game is to protect the village from flooding by the sea. The longer you protect it, the higher your Score gets. -Click the blue arrow in the lower-left corner to access the 'shop' menu. Here, you can buy different structures, each does something to help hinder the advancing sea. You need enough money in order to buy them (you earn more money over time). Once you've bought a structure, you need to click where you want to place it. (You can't have 2 of the same structure at once.) -You lose once most or all houses are destroyed. (The variable 'Sea Border' refers to how much the sea can advance compared to the coastline, it will keep decreasing as you play, which means the sea will be able to get closer and closer to the houses. The variable 'Water Depth' determines the chance that the sea will destroy the houses. The higher it is, the faster the houses will be destroyed.) What each structure does in this game: --Gabion - Slows the sea down significantly for a certain amount of time. --Rip Rap - Slightly slows down the sea for a bit. --Groyne - Increases the 'sea border' (which means that water will back away). --Seawall - Decreases the rate at which the sea erodes the coastline (the rate at which 'sea border' decreases). --Drainage Pipe - Decreases the water depth. --Beach Nourishment - Slightly decreases the water depth. --Dune Restoration - Slightly decreases the rate at which 'sea border' decreases. --Geo-Textiles - Slightly increases the 'sea border'. Note: Each time you restart the game, a new village will be randomly-generated. Credits: Code, art and concept by me.
