"we are caskets, waiting to bury ourselves" ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ❖ » Forum version: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/848125/?page=1#post-8849676 » Note: This is a slightly edited version of my comp piece; there are differences between this and the forum version. » My entry for the SWC writing competition! A more serious author’s note can be found at the bottom of the forum version. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ❖ This was an interesting piece to write in almost every way — let’s just say, I’ve never written from the point of view of a marionette puppet lol. It felt simultaneously similar and very different to anything I’ve written before: description-based over action-based, an extended metaphor which may or may not translate on paper, limited options to show emotion (as the main character is a marionette puppet, I couldn’t use phrases like “skin crawled” or “sweat trickled”, etc). Even tougher was trying to find which scenes were necessary for the story I wanted to tell, and which needed to be cut. I don’t know how well I executed any of these things, but I’m so glad I wrote it. It was my own spin on topics of culture and inferiority complexes and immigration — I don’t think I’ll ever be able to write about serious (and delicate) subjects without including a convoluted allegory for it lol. I learnt how to operate a loom, the anatomy of marionette puppets, and different types of stitches for this story. I was shaking when I submitted it for the competition. It’s far from perfect; I’ll read it months from now and have things I wish I’d edited. But I am so, so glad I wrote it. I wrote it for myself, and my great-grandmother who just recently passed away. I hope you enjoy reading it. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ❖ ✎ sтσяү: me - forum version, 1,983 words; project version, 2,037 words ▢ вαcкgяσυη∂s: Canva ◎ тɪмε: a week of brainstorming, about 2+ days of solid writing ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ ❖ #wearecaskets #waitingtoburyourselves #writingpiece
