CW/TW: Prey death, blood TIMESKIP I race to catch up with my mentor Grasswhistle. There's only a day before we go to the Wintertruce, so I'm plotting a way to be the only one to stay back again. Rich scents of prey fill my mouth as I taste the air. "There's a lot of water vole this morning," I note. Grasswhistle runs his tongue around his jaws. "Yep. Today's gonna be good hunting." I split up with him and head to the slope, where I know I'll find some small rodents. Making my way downhill, I taste the air again and smell a stronger vole scent. It's coming from a bracken bush across from me. I swivel my head around and slowly creep up to the bush, then pounce and bite down. Vole blood fills my mouth, and I pull up a limp body. I make my way around the slope, catching more voles and even going to a pool to fish. Soon, my jaws are loaded with prey, and I head over to the place where my mentor and I were last. He sits on the ground, washing. A huge pile of fish lay by his leg. "Prey was bountiful where you were fishing," I say, setting down my prey. "The stream was almost running with fish instead of water," Grasswhistle chuckles, licking at his chest fur. Suddenly, I get an idea to stay back in camp for the Wintertruce. "Grasswhistle," I meow innocently, "can we hunt some more by the ColdClan border? I only have...three voles and the smallest fish I've ever caught." He stops washing and ponders for a moment. "I've enough prey, but I'll go with you just in case a patrol comes." I'm really hoping a patrol comes. My whole plan centers around that. I swish my tail restlessly as we make our way to the border. I pretend to look for prey, but my paws are tingling with anticipation. Then I hear rustling. A patrol! It's a mentor and an apprentice. "Hey!" the gray tabby apprentice hisses. "You're trespassing! Get off our land! Or I'll fight you!" I unsheathe my claws. If he wants a fight, I'll be glad to fight him! That's definitely a valid reason not to go to the Wintertruce!
