CHAPTER THREE “Two hours!” Rain complained from her nest in the nursery. Rain’s mother, Lillyan, chuckled from where she was grooming her side. Rain stuffed her nose under her paws in annoyance. Lillyan sniffed, “Well, imagine getting a pack of wolves off the territory, I’m quite sure a battle would erupt.” She said in that tone of voice that said, ‘and-there’s-nothing-you-can-do-about-it.’ Then she went back to grooming her light fur. Rain groaned dramatically, and flopped on her back. Suddenly a deep gruff howl broke the silence in the clearing. Rain’s head popped up from where she was lying. Excitement coursed through her veins as she grazed the clearing for wolves. In the head of the pack was Cerberus, one of the wolves that had found the invading pack. He had blood splatters on his muzzle, and his fur was matted with dirt and redness. Rain leapt to her paws and ran out of the den, but before she got to the door, her scruff was yanked backward and she tumbled onto her rump. Her mother’s jaw was clenching onto her extra fur around her neck, “You’re not going anywhere until the Healer Wolf can do his job.” She muffled out, then spat out her daughter’s fur from her mouth. Rain huffed and drooped her head, her back legs tucked underneath of her, and she laid down in a loaf sit. Lillyan trotted over to the entrance and sat there, in case her daughter decides to make an escape. Instead Rain was off looking through her secret peep hole, where she usually spied on Lotus when she was making young trainee’s into full Fighters. She gazed out, the grass around the hole was waving slightly in the wind. In front of the grass was the large pack of wolves behind Cerberus, who was speaking to Lotus. Rain pricked her ears, trying to hear what he was saying. “They ran… after a while… pup followed… he’s here…” Rain caught a few of the dark furred wolf’s sentence, but she couldn’t exactly hear what he said. Something about a pup… maybe it will come into the nursery. In sudden eagerness, Rain rushed over to the entrance and poked her head over mothers’ stomach, in hopes to see the new pup. Instead all she saw was the tails and legs of other wolves. *move!* she snarled to the wolves in her mind. The wolves didn’t listen. Rain crawled over her mother’s stomach sneakily, but she was pushed right back into the den again. Rain huffed, “I just want to see what’s happening!” She exclaimed in desperation. Lillyan flicked her tail tip in amusement at her only daughter, “Fine, fine,” she replied, “just don’t be long. It’s nap time soon.” Rain leapt to her paws as quickly as possible, and raced out of the den. As soon as she got out a gust of warm wind billowed up her thick grey pelt, and flattened her ears against her head. She opened her blue eyes wide, and gazed around. She saw Cerberus, Caspian, and Lotus all talking together. In front of Lotus, practically sitting on her paws, was a small white furred pup. He had a fluffy tail and big ears, his eyes were wide and scared. Rain trotted up determinedly, her tail waved out behind her and she kicked up the dust on the ground. The pup glanced over, and in curiosity he tilted his head and leaned forward in between Lotus’s legs. Rain laid down and playfully wagged her tail, and yipped slightly. The pup looked amused and walked over, his fluffy tail up high. Rain got up and walked over to him. “Hi! My name is Rain.” She said to the smaller pup. The wolf perked up a bit from looking scared. “My name is Ghost,” he said, “where am I? The older she-wolf wouldn’t tell me anything.” He looked a little mad while he spoke. Rain shook her head slightly and sat down, “That was Lotus, she’s leader. By the way, you’re in my pack. It’s called Feather Pack.”
