The dye takes eighteen tries before it takes. Pearl asked me to help because she’s busy, though, and I’d do anything for Pearl. “Are you finished?” Joel asks, his eye twitching as he tries not to yawn. “No. Now I have to put the streak back in. Unless you just want plain brown hair.” He shakes his head, biting his lip, one of his favorite nervous tics. “Stop it.” I say sternly, and he stops. Watcher’s bloody eye, my hands look like Katherine’s when she’s been working in the gardens. “Almost there. Just gotta rinse.” I inform him, before dumping another bucket of water on his head. There’s no convenient access to a shower or sink because Tango insisted we do it outside. “Thanks, Gem.” I smile. “You’re welcome, Joel. Now come on, I need a shower. It’s all over my fur.” He laughs. It’s so weak I almost miss it, but it definitely happened. Slowly but surely, I think we’re going to get the real Joel back. Lizzie’s by the back door when we get there, and something about just seeing Joel seems to make her mad. “So first you got everybody else to try and convince me that you’re my missing husband, and now you’re trying to look like him? This is a new low for anybody I’ve ever encountered.” “Lizzie!” I snap, her eyes widening as she takes a step back. It’s a well known fact around our complex that when I get angry, everyone’s about to have a really bad time. “You know how you’re The White Rabbit?” She nods, clearly confused. Keeping my tone terse as I fold my cervituar legs underneath me, I explain the concept of The March Hare and The White Rabbit always being two people who were very close to each other outside of their roles, but because The White Rabbit and The March Hare are opposites, once the two take their roles, they are unable to recognize each other. A white aura surrounds Lizzie, and then shatters. A voice echoes loudly from all directions. “THE ROLE OF THE WHITE RABBIT HAS BEEN ABSORBED BY THE MARCH HARE.” Confusion crosses her and Joel’s faces, so I know they hear it too. Lizzie pulls out her phone and gestures to the official group chat for this hocus pocus voodoo stuff. “Everyone else who Bigb named as having a role heard it too! But nobody else did!” She shouts. “Wait, so I absorbed your role? The bloody heck does that even mean?!” Joel exclaims. “I think you’re The March Hare and The White Rabbit?” Lizzie offers, voice going higher at the end, indicating that she did not actually know, and was, in fact, taking a complete shot in the dark.
