We park the van in a deserted parking lot, where WildHeart’s streets and buildings end and meet the vast forest beyond. The wind bites into my skin and I shiver, sinking deeper into the thin jacket that’s my only source of protection against the cold air. “Are you cold?” Onyx asks. My cheeks bloom red. “No…I mean sort of…” “You can have my coat,” Onyx takes it off and hands it to me, exposing her bare arms to the wind. “No…I-I can’t…” I stutter. It feels so warm I can barely resist her offer. “I mean…won’t you be cold?” “Nah,” Onyx shrugs. "Don’t worry about me.” Winter, who’s in the lead, stops at the thick, barbed wire fence seperating the Wilds from the town of Wildheart. A battered metal sign clings to the wire, swaying back and forth. PRIVATE PROPERTY. AUTHORIZED ACCESS ONLY. “The gate where they let the vans in is probably on the other side,” Winter muses. His shoulders sink. “I wish Zara was here. She was a strategic genius.” “Please,” Onyx scoffs. “I think between the three of us, we can cook up a brilliant stratagem to get inside faster than she could.” “Sure,” Winter mutters, seeming unconvinced. “Winter,” Nadia says encouragingly. “This can’t be too hard. All that’s between us and the Wilds is this barbed wire. And thankfully for us, we have wire cutters.” “Wha-where did you get those?” Winter gawks as she holds out a pair of large metal clippers. “There was a toolbox under the glove department.” I’m practically jumping up and down. This will be so easy! How could I not have seen that before? No all we have to do is sneak into the camp, find where they’re holding the captured therians, and rescue Am- “GET DOWN!” Onyx yells, shoving me and Winter to the ground. I spit out a clod of dirt. “Onyx, wha-” And then I hear the gunshots.
