Chapter 1 The sun had risen over the horizon of The Kingdom of the Sky; Vapor had woken up early for the day he had been waiting for since the day he was born; it was time for him to become an apprentice. He had no idea what to do when he got there, was he supposed to talk to them at the beginning, or even at all? Honestly, he would prefer not to talk at all. He had been preparing for this day for the past week, cleaning his home, practicing what to do, and so much more than he could say. He didn’t know what would happen during or even before the apprenticeship ceremony, he did know that he was supposed to go somewhere by someone bringing him there. From what he had heard, he was supposed to be taken to a place that’s hidden from anywhere else. He had been waiting for most of the day inside his house for someone to take him there but still had to wait for them. He waited until a dragon of the night appeared from behind his home, they had dark scales, almost black, and had white speckles on their wings that looked like stars. A gasp caught in Vapor's throat, and he stumbled back, his webbed feet struggling to stay on the ground; The ground felt unsteady beneath him, and he had to clench his fists to stay upright. He’d never seen anyone like them before; he’d thought that he had seen this dragon from some scrolls that he had read, but he still wasn’t sure. The dragon looked at Vapor and said, “The queen wants to see you, come with me.” The dragon had said. “Oh, alright.” Vapor said while is voice was shaking by the sudden arrival of the dragon. They nodded and started to fly away. Vapor immediately followed him, where were they taking him? He wondered about where he was supposed to go to and what would happen when he got there. Vapor followed them until they eventually made it to The Cloudstone Ruins, there was rocks all around them as they flew. Suddenly, he saw the palace, it was a large building made of marble and at the top there was a giant glass window that was outlined with rare gemstones. They eventually made it to the palace’s doors; two guards were standing at the front of it. “Hello there Moon,” The guard had said as they arrived. "Is this the sea dragon that the queen requested?" “Yes, it is. I will stay out here as you guide them to Queen Star.” Moon said, their wings twitching nervously. “Good luck!” Moon said as Vapor followed the two guards. Vapor tried to avoid eye contact with everyone that they saw on the way to the queen, thinking that it might be rude to look at everyone there. As they walked past, he saw multiple different dragons, most of them were night dragons like Moon and the other two guards, but he noticed some that looked like sand dragons. The sand dragons had yellow scales that looked like sand, and they had dark eyes that almost looked black. When Vapor noticed them, he immediately looked back, the dark eyes looked really unsettling to him, the dark eyes looked like there weren’t any eyes and they were just no eyes at all. The building was filled with multiple lanterns that were very bright, Vapor thought. The room was filled with an earthy smell, it seemed to be coming from a plantation nearby, but he couldn’t find any as they were walking. Eventually, the guards went into a room that was filled with large gemstones that had many distinct colors. He noticed that there were some paintings around her room as he was looking at it. He saw Queen Star sitting down on a bed that was white with large ribbons that lined the top of the bed. Queen Star seemed to be a sky dragon, with flamelike scales and bright blue eyes. She seemed to be wearing a crown that was plated with gold and had rubies embedded in the crown. When Vapor entered the room, her eyes brightened as she saw him, “So, you must be Vapor, right?” Queen Star asked him. “Yes, I’m Vapor.” Vapor paused before adding, “Sorry for asking this, but… why did you tell Moon to bring me here?” Vapor replied, looking at her with questioning eyes. Queen Star smiled, a bright, warm expression that made Vapor feel reassured despite himself, “There’s no need to apologize, it’s a good question. The truth is, I didn’t summon you to be an apprentice, I summoned you for a special assignment—an apprenticeship unlike any other.” Vapor hesitated, his webbed talons shuffling uncomfortably on the ground. What was the assignment? Why him? His thoughts raced in his head as he was thinking about what he was supposed to do. It felt like forever until Queen Star said anything else, “You see, you're a dragon unlike anyone in Aethera. You're a sea dragon, which means you possess traits from a group that lives a long distance from the Kingdom of Sky.” She paused, leaning forward, “I have chosen for you to be the Secretkeeper of Aethera.”
