Chapter 1 is here! Chapter 1 I grew up thinking about one thing. One day, I would marry a man. Walking down the aisle, flowers in my hands, I would be ready. Together forever. As I was thinking this, I wondered if that was what I wanted. I wasn’t so sure about it. I thought that this was normal, and I shouldn’t be so sure. One day, I met a girl. She was the same age as me. I felt a connection to her; she was my best friend. Her name was Alice Summers. Her family was Chinese so she could speak their language. She had short, black hair with a fringe and green eyes. She had a beauty mark just under her lips and pale skin. She often denied it, but she was very good at poetry. One day she came up to me looking nervous. I asked her if she was alright and she replied with the smallest sound. “I-I have s-something t-t-to um tell you.” I was worried that she was going to say that she never wanted to be my friend. Or that she was going to move to a different country miles away. The words in my head turned into a swarm. My hope all turned into panic as she opened her mouth and blurted out, “I’m gay. But you can’t tell anyone.” I was relieved but confused. The only time I ever heard this word was when boys in my class were saying that I was gay. I didn’t know what it meant, but I always assumed it was a bad thing. When I got home, I had a lot of questions for Mum.
