✿ ❀ ‧₊˚❀༉‧₊˚. Chapter One Dawn .˚₊‧˚❀༉‧₊❀ ✿ Ten year old Dawn Crya listened to the clicks and noises of her game as her thumbs moved across the screen quicker than you could see. But then the pixelated elves on The Quest For Elfia paused, and her iPhone was taken away. “Miss Crya! Can you explain why you were playing on your phone instead of the class?” Her phone was held over the desk by the meaty fingers of Mister Johnson. Dawn’s violet and purple eyes glinted as she tried to come up with a credible excuse. She pulled her long dark hair in front of her, wishing she could hide behind it. Dawn had been mischievous for most of her life. When she was three she found a way to get into everything. Once in a while, she would blink and see a beautiful arc of specks of rainbow light, filled with glittering forms like people. Almost like she was being warned about something. But when she opened her eyes, it was gone. “I- I was done with the math.” The gold flecks in Dawn’s eyes sparkled, and her soft voice edged with mischief. She and Mister Johnson both stared down at the empty page in front of her. Dawn’s hands grabbed the pencil and it flew across the page with insane speed. Soon, every question was answered in neat, sparkly teal writing. Silence. Just for a heartbeat. Mr Johnson grumbled as he gave back her phone. His green eyes shone with annoyance as he smoothed his red hair and walked back to his desk. Dawn slipped her airpods and let the familiar movements of playing wipe away her worries. If only she was normal… ♢ The day slipped away and Dawn was outside. Dark, smoky clouds covered the sun. Streaks of orange splattered the blue sky. Dawn started the walk back home. All was silent, except for the sounds of her footsteps and the wind blowing in her long dark hair. Howling wind rustled through the branches and made the clouds dance across the sky. Fresh rain tapped its fingertips on the pavement. Dawn tapped the sole of her sneaker on the ground, splattering a puddle across her jeans. Home. Finally. ♢ (go to notes and credits)
Dawn opened her door and slid off her mud-spotted white sneakers. She ran up the stairs and slammed the door to her room. White walls stretched up towards a white ceiling where a light cast both light and shadows dancing across the wood floor. A fluffy baby blue couch sat against the wall, facing towards a TV. In the middle of the back wall, a four-poster bed with a cloudy canopy that actually snowed and violet curtains. Dark blue blankets and white pillows completed Dawn’s bedroom. A bookshelf and desk sat in the corner, with a computer monitor and a stack of books. And everything was covered in a thin layer of frost. A woof echoed through the room. “Hi, Fuzzi.” Dawn stroked the back of her brown fluffy dog. Nighttime stars shone frosty light into the room from the tall windows. “Why do I feel so small, Fuzzi? Against the night and the stars, I’m smaller than everybody wants to be.” Dawn sighed. Gold flecks in her eyes shifted to blue. “I never realized that I’m not needed in the world.” But you are needed. A voice whispered, fully believing in her. I feel like I’m not. Dawn thought back. “You really are.” A voice spoke from behind. Dawn jumped. “Who are you?” A tall girl, about a year older than Dawn stood behind her. Straight blonde hair fell across her shoulders, and piercing eyes shone a shade of emerald green. “That doesn’t matter,” she said. “I need you to come with me.” A blue bracelet slid off her wrist and levitated so the moonlight hit the only violet bead. A beam of pale purple light shone up towards the ceiling and shone with the power of a spotlight. Spots of amethyst danced in the girls’ eyes, making the two look like twins. “Step in,” she remarked. “It won’t hurt you.” Anxiously, Dawn stepped into the beam of light. She shut her eyes tightly. Dawn opened her eyes. “Woah,” she whispered. In front of her was an infinite black void. Rainbow specks like stars glowed in the distance, making it look like the universe was covered in paint of every color. One circle window hovering over a speck of light showed an animated blur of colors. A girl with blonde hair holding a golden feather, placing it on the wall. It shifted to perfectly match the colors of the walls. The image became clear, and suddenly Dawn could see the image of her room and the mysterious girl. She walked to the bookmark and tapped it. Suddenly she fell from the sky and landed next to Dawn. “Now proper introductions,” she said. “I’m Luna Swiftshade and I’m a half-blood.” “I- I’m Dawn Crya and I don’t know who I am,” the flecks in her eyes shifted to blue. “What is a half-blood?” Luna sighed. “Half Fairy, half Elf. My mom is a Dream Fairy and my dad is an Elvin legacy.” “Half-bloods must be beautiful then.” It took Dawn a minute to realize that she had spoken the thought out loud. “Thanks, but I get that a lot.” Dawn’s eyes lit up with green, turning her eyes a deep shade of emerald. “Where are we going?” she asked. “To show you the future. Voltion Gates, please.” The rainbow dots shifted around so an indigo sphere hung close to the girls. Luna took one step, and the sphere swallowed her in light. Dawn took a deep breath, and took the two hardest steps of her life. Out of the past, and into the future.
