READ THE WHOLE THING There are many people arguing whether the ai implemented into scratch only will help fix bugs or if it will steal art. If you read the user Terms of Services, you will see that Scratch has rights to use your projects to publicly display and perform, reproduce, distribute etc. so that they can advertise, market, promote, etc. and TRAIN AI MODELS ST did say that they were not going to implement ai generation , and that they were not gonna feed our projects to AI anytime soon. The problem is that they did not provide clear answers, used vague language, and also used phrases like “anytime soon” and “work in this space is still in progress ”. ST has already lost trust though out the years, and implementing any ai of any form is going make them lose even more, no matter what it does. They claim they’re always listening to feedback, but plenty of Scratchers know that’s not true. We don’t need fearmongering, but we also don’t need the group of people who claim to help us to completely ignore all the problems piling up here. The ST also has limited power over this, so despite their promises, AI may still take from projects. I understand that art is not the thing Scratch wants from the projects, but plenty of artists are wary of ai. It’s not trustworthy and it can ruin some people’s reputations. Many are unhappy simply because Scratch has added the AI in a community full of people who don’t like or use AI, and they did it without warning. Plus, the ai in general is just unnecessary. If a child needs to get “unstuck” they can use the search bar and comment sections. There’s no point in teaching a kid to expect answers to just come to them any time. There are environmental concerns too. Even though ai only makes up about 2% of the greenhouse gasses being emitted, it’s still concerning because of the newly widespread use of ai. It takes up trees, which are needed to combat carbon it the atmosphere. Even though right now it’s a small concern, it could be big in the future. But don’t be fooled by misinformation. SCRATCH IS NOT STEALING YOUR ART. SCRATCH IS NOT GOING TO BE USING THE AI FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE OTHER THAN PROVIDING CODE. Even then, trying to hide AI in something that they knew not many people would read was a bad idea, and they should know not to do stuff like that without putting some form of announcement or highlight on it.
There is a boycott planned for Feb.1-7. Hopefully that will get Scratch to tell us what’s really going on, and whether we really need to panic or not. Some people are honestly going too far with the hate, and some are quitting. We really need more information before we do or say something we might regret.
