I hear myself scream as I try to struggle away from him, but it’s too late. I feel his fangs in my neck and the way his hands grip my arms tightly to stop any attempt of my escaping. After what feels like an eternity, the Lumberjack finally pulls back, wiping the blood off his mouth with the back of his hand. “No. What…what did you do to me?!’ I gasp. “What did you do?!” “Oh, I was just…feeding. And by the looks of it, I guess I accidentally turned you in the process,” he scoffs, rolling his eyes. “Got a bit carried away. I was just so hungry… y’know?” ”What?! No. No, no, no. I-I can’t be a vampire! I can’t be! I don’t want to be a monster like you and the mayor!” I say, panic creeping into my voice, as my hand flies up to feel the bite mark on my neck. The Lumberjack growls. “Louis was not a monster. They accused him of being a monster. It was an accusation. He was no monster. And I have a name, thank you very much.” I blink, my hand still covering the bite mark. “And what is your name?” I demand. “What my name is none of your business. Now why don’t you run back home before I find a stake and end you.” He scoffs, turning his back to me again. “You turned me! I at least get the right to know the monster’s name!” I scoff back. His eyes flash when I call him a monster again, but finally he just sighs reluctantly. “Owen. Name’s Owen.” “Owen? Seriously? The lumberjack who got turned into a monster and razed Oakhurst to the ground is called… Owen?!” I say, slowly lowering my hand from my neck. “Yes. My name is Owen. don’t act so surprised that the “monster” has a name. I’m not called ‘The Lumberjack’,” He says sarcastically, emphasising the word ‘monster’. “Now get out of here and let me die in peace.” *** My feet ache as I stumble down the jagged cliffside. What will the people at town think? Will I have to see all my friends die? WHAT ABOUT GARLIC BREAD. “Town-” I stutter. “town…I have to get back.” The once treacherous path feels easy as my feet glide through the thick mud. The sun is setting when I arrive back onto the stable dirt paths of the town. Town members start realising that I’m back and approach me to ask where I had been. I don’t respond, I don’t know how to, I just nod and keep walking. The door swings open as the wind picks up and Chester sees me walking inside. “You scared me to death, where did you go overnight? I had the whole town searching for you!” he walks over to me but I can’t meet his eyes and I walk up the stairs pulling the heavy wooden attic door to a close. I grasp my hand around my neck to the bite mark. “What have I done?” *** May 24 A young girl came into town today, she didn’t remember any of her previous life. I saw myself in her, helpless, young and scared. I moved out from Chester’s not long after the attack, I couldn’t bare hiding this strange hunger I have now. I live on the outskirts of town on a small animal farm, the farm creates an excuse for me to have a herd of cattle and be able to eat raw meat in secret. I offered to take the young girl in and look after her, the town agreed knowing that I need company, being on the edge of the town. She seems excited about living on a farm. She only remembers one thing, her name… *** “Welcome, Cleo”
