Population development of municipalities within the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) 1946–present Notes: Following the incorporation of the DDR into the BRD, there have been many municipal reforms, such as in Brandenburg in 2003. Amalgamation usually inflates population size and causes large, predominantly rural municipalities to reach the threshold without their constituent places doing so, such as the Thuringian municipality of Leinefelde-Worbis. Official government population predictions were used for the years 1955 and 1989. These numbers may not be entirely accurate to the real-life situation, for example: in the 2011 German census, the census population was 1,5 million people lower than the predicted population, which resulted in many technical issues. The official name of the city commonly known as „East Berlin“ was Berlin, Hauptstadt der DDR (English: Berlin, capital of the German Democratic Republic). Neither government has legally referred to the municipality with the designation „East“. It is provided here for disambiguation purposes.
