Update: So the other day I saw someone mention how scratch team has responded to this, you can see what they said here: https://www.scratchfoundation.org/ai My overall plan for this whole ai thing hasn't really changed though, I'm mostly waiting to see what happens for now and if push comes to shove I'll take my leave and move to a different website [Read notes & credits for information on the main issue for the new TOS] New scratch TOS... So your telling my stuff is COMPLETELY and LEGALLY fine to be used for generative AI model Training? Uh... yeah no thanks, I just saw about this stuff today from other people and its apparently ALREADY in place Well there goes my scratch career- So... what does this mean for me? Most likely, I'm just gonna be moving to another website as I REALLY don't want my stuff being use for AI slop and while sadly I can't control what I've already posted to this site as long as one of my OCs or artworks isn't used to promote something completely random, I'll be fine Second thing, if people protest enough for it to be removed I'll likely stick around, but until then? I'm likely gonna be taking a project posting hiatus, I already know myself well enough that I'm gonna still be checking this site daily, so what I'm thinking about doing is moving all my in progress projects over to another website for the time being I "may" post a few projects from time to time but they'll likely be memes or something I generally don't care for the AI to use So uh yeah, was really hoping to leave this site feeling accomplished and all that jazz but that's not happening any time soon
Most Info I got comes from this project: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1269751874/ While making this, I looked more into it and here's the Main things I've learned: You know that weird terms of service agreement pop-up that appeared a few days ago? That was them implementing these changes: - Basically anything you post in your project, can be legally used by the scratch team and other affiliates to Train AI models, so that mean everything I've posted throughout my 4 years of this site can be used to train AI Models, this here is the BIG main issue of this TOS update - There is absolutely no way to opt out of this system, meaning once you've agreed to the TOS you are willing allowing them to use your creations for AI training - Scratch Team only really plans to use Ai as a assistant that people can use, as generative AI is actually on their rejected suggestion list due to ethical reasons, so no AI generative tools for scratch any time soon So overall, the big issue here is Scratch needing us to allow our stuff to be used to train Ai models for us to y'know, even use Scratch in the first place, with no way to opt out of it (well for now) What bothers me the most is that I have to willing allowing them to use my stuff to train something I'm against just to even use the site (In terms of AI overall, I'm mostly just against generative AI since that encourages people to be lazy rather than ACTUALLY try to make something, I didn't spend over half a year in magma practicing my art for nothing Afterall, assistant AI's [Basically the type of AI you ask a question and it gives you a response] I'm fine with since that's just for information purposes, though can be off at times)
