ironic that im using an art piece from roblox lol. i know very well no one really reads these descriptions but oh well! i want to throw my thoughts into the void in hopes that they will whisper back a response. [ note ] obviously i think we have already established that generative ai is detrimental to all artists in the creative realm. so i will not further delve into the argument of why artificial intelligence is, least to say, virulent towards artists. [ context ] ☆ scratch released a new terms of service, (you can't miss it if you logged into your account) ☆ details include an additional third party that "hereby grant... us a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license...to publicly display...perform... reproduce, distribute, create derivative works of, and otherwise use and exploit the User Content to provide the Service [Scratch], for internal business purposes, to advertise, market, and promote the service, and to otherwise improve our products and services and create new products and services, including through the training of AI models." ☆ source: (2. Limited License Grant https://mitscratch.freshdesk.com/en/support/solutions/articles/4000219182-scratch-terms-of-service ) ☆ blablabla obviously people freaked out about these new terms and conditions, but according to scratch, they are not currently doing AI training, or implementing generative AI. ☆ do what you want with that information, my two cents is: where do you place your trust: with a more legally binding Terms of Service, or Scratch's announcement? sure they say they are not implementing the gen AI any time soon. But they could, and (legally) all our work has the potential in being used. ☆ for now, I do not see them doing such things. It is almost a waste to scour through the thousands of projects each day for photos, images and art pieces when much of the daily influx is just blank projects or ... generally just random images. ☆ i do think if you really do not want your art to be fed into the maws of the machine, never post your art online. It sounds bad but AI is truly inespacable now. ☆ programs that prevent ai theft (glaze, nightshade) also have the possibility of being put counter programs that remove the ai prevention features. BUT, you should still take all measures to inconvienience art thefts, because that would only be a step towards prevention. ☆ glaze information if you want to read for youself: http://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/what-is-glaze.html [ major questions ] Why do companies support AI? ☆ Long story short, for money. ☆ Companies not only want to generate more income for profit, but they also can't afford to lose any money for things they deem "unnecessary", and in this case: hiring artists/animators for their designs, ads, logos etc. Artificial Intelligence will only benefit their company, because they don't need to hire workers, they don't need to create art, they don't need humans to run the machines anymore. They always want to find a way to maximise the amount they receive, and minimize the amount they put out. This should not be surprising news; we often see greed as the root of corruption, portrayed through movies, books, and in real life. ☆ another reason for the pressure of squeezing every single cent is because of stocks... I am no finance bro, but the gist is that people buy the companies stocks, and they will want to expect the company to do well. ☆ BASICALLY: easiest explanation, I buy shares of a company at a price. If the company does well, my share (stock) price rises. Once the stock price rises, I can then sell my stocks to earn some money. For example, I buy a roblox stock for 10 dollars. The company does well, increasing my stock price to 20. I can then sell it, and earn 10 dollars for myself. Why do people use AI? ☆ Many believe that its inclusive way for people who do not draw. It's fast, easy, cheap, and panders to the consumerist mentality that has circulated in our society for a long time. ☆ generative images are like fast food. People eat it because it's convenient. You may understand the negative implications it can lead to, but in the end, does it matter? It's just one hamburger, but do you know the amount of salt, oil, fat, greed, ethical and environmental issues put into this burger? No, you eat it because it tastes good. Do we hate all AI? ☆ Artificial Intelligence has been around for quite a long time ! it has been used in the medical field, CGI, and video games. but there is a distinction between ai and generative ai. ☆ generative ai is a subclass of artificial intelligence that focuses on using pre-existing content, media, images etc to generate new content, while traditional ai is designed to follow preset rules and inputs, with the main difference of being unable to create new content. ☆ and obviously the creation of new content is the main reason why generative AI is so bad, because it uses our human-made designs for minimal effort outputs.
Can we ever escape? ☆ Can we ever stop the progression of technology? No. Enlightenment ideals of advancement will continuously persist. I do not think we should be afraid of this progress, but to acknowledge the consequences that these technologies have and will impact/ed. Understanding is vastly different from taking action, though; we also will need new laws to address the interference between our work and their generated content. ☆ Perhaps we will see these artificial intelligence used in a better manner in the future, or not. ☆ I do think, regardless of the good, bad, and ugly, AI has become a buzzword for mainstream media. It gets you views. Whether it is criticism or praise, it has the eyes of the internet because it is currently the advancing technology that holds great promises. Society has long fantasized for the day when robots live amongst the humans, and that reality grows closer to us each day. now the question just lies in, will we lose hope? ☆ i sure hope the answer is no because nothing will ever take away the beauty of an artist and their tool. Art cannot be described with words, and the outcome comes from the journey, not the result. Your artpiece is made upon hours and hours of work, practice and previous knowledge. ☆ i believe the best way of prevention in the end is passing laws. but in the meantime, continue to make art if it makes you happy! ☆ did hearing loss prevent beethoven from composing music? no. did percy and annabeth lose all hope after falling into tartarus? NO. Did Link RETIRE AS A KNIGHT AFTER LOSING HIS ARM? NO. ☆ perhaps these were not the best metaphors, but what i'm trying to say is even when all else went wrong, they clung onto their passion, determination, and purpose, and that was what prevailed in the end. ☆ so... continue to draw ! that happiness, sense of accomplishment, improvement can never be replicated by technology. write that book, make the video, create the song. don't let the dread of your potential creation being fed into a content generating slop prevent you from creating in the first place. btw this art piece made me 100 robux ohhh yeahhh
